Fair. Two more thoughts: 1) games and utilities have very different lifetimes and that changes how the lists impact them 2) you may like different games than the average iOS user. ;)

Pinterest and Voxer climbed the lists quickly, but if I remember correctly Instagram was not at the top after their first few weeks, and didn't seem to have problems acquiring users when it was not a top25 or top50 app. Maybe these are all outliers too. Almost everything I think I know only relates to the Social category.

I hear over and over again some version of "iOS apps depend upon appearing in iTunes’ Top 25 lists, leading to a 'rich get richer' bias" (Fred made a similar argument a while back). Can you elaborate? What is your evidence?

Every week lots of apps fall off the top 25, and every week there are new great apps that make it onto the top list without paying for the position or getting an editorial blessing from Apple. Lots of apps that clung on for a long time are nowhere to be seen now. Our own data says less than 25% (and that's conservative, I think it's quite a bit lower) discover Bump through the top lists (although thats 4X more than through press mentions). Personally I think the apps that stay on those lists *are* the ones people love and tell their friends about.

Whenever I hear people complain about this I worry they are looking for an excuse when their product is actually the problem.

But I could be totally crazy and our experience at Bump is definitely not the norm. Maybe this is true for the most downloaded apps but not true when you are trying to get discovered. Or maybe it's only true for apps that are two player only.

Then again show me the great apps that aren't getting users only because they aren't on the top 25 list and I bet I can show you 25 apps users love more.

Is your objection to the physical interaction or to someone else touching your phone? The "official" way to bump is to hold your phone in your hand and bump the other person's hand (like a fist bump and as pictured in our icon), that way your phone doesn't directly contact the other phone. Sorry to hear you hate Bump and hope you change your mind some day! :)

The whole album kills me, so much so that it is hard to listen to a single track. This plus Teen Dream by Beach House were my most listened to albums the first half of this year. So good.

iPhone to Android does work but you can currently only share photos and contacts (they don't have identical sharing features, iPhone has Social Networks and Calendar while Android has Apps). Keep an eye out for the Bump 2.0 for Android later this year.

Fred, too bad I missed you when I was in NYC a few weeks ago. Let me know if you ever want to catch up in SF. Lots of good shows coming up... :)

Wow that brings back memories. I have never wanted anything more in my life. Starting in 1996 I was just waiting and dreaming for an mp3 player. And then the Rio came, and we held the future. I wonder if I can find mine at home somewhere.

Bluetooth is actually really tough to get to work across different platforms, that was part of the reason we decided to develop a new technology. Bump already works on Android, so it is not iPhone only (and you can bump an Android phone into and iPhone). Support for Bumping Blackberrys is in the works. :)

The Bump Technology is platform agnostic. But we are a small team so we are only supporting Android and iPhone right now. Eventually we would like to support every platform.

Yup, you can bump and Android into an iPhone. We don't support all of the same features on both platforms, but contacts and photos can be bumped between them.

Hey Dave,

Bump does not require WiFi, any internet connection will do. If one person is on WiFi and the other is on cellular (3G/EDGE) Bump will work.
