Shaun, Saverio, here's a crazy idea:

What about releasing the server (not necessarily even as FLOSS)? This would:

a) allow the MobileChat app to be used by those who aren't comfortable with sending their personal data through 3rd party servers,

b) lessen the load on your servers.

User could then select in Settings if they wanted to use the official server or enter the host:port and possibly a user/pass to a private server.

Of course with a big notice that all your data goes through that server and that you shouldn't use it if you don't trust it.

I know how you feel, I've been waiting for a while myself. Don't know why us new guys get 10 invites, but people on the list get left behind.

So I guess it won't connect to IM servers directly anymore, but via a proxy (like Fring)?

It obviously won't be free in the freedom sense anymore, but will it still be free as in free beer?

Also, what is it that will make it better than fring?
