In our state we run an "exchange." The premiums for health care are 2 1/2 times what they are in the private sector. This is the state/federal "subsidation. No one can afford it and all we do is pay a bunch of bureaucrats to operate something that no one can afford. Halleluah! State run medical insurance, just what I always wanted just like living in the projects and eating from food stamps.

Re: Power Line - No comment

Ahhhhh. Discovery, revelation, intelligent thought lost again! Reading the comments gives one an insight into the microcosm of the Country. I didn't realize how leftists view the USA and the world. I'll miss the discussions and the possibility of discovering a "new idea." However, I think that with Columbus' desire to prove the Earth round, there has not been an original idea since 1492. I mean, even our own democracy was imported from others' ideas.

To Caley: Columbus' goal was NOT to prove the world round; that original idea had already been advanced; he was a capitalist - looking for resources and a profit!

Sad to see comments go. - on Columbus day no less!

Re: Power Line - Paul Rahe: Has Obama earned that prize?

It's still the Nobel "Appease Award" no matter who gets it. $300 Billion for interest on the debt the past year (.40 of every taxpayer dollar that goes to Washington, D.C. goes for interest on the debt). We can't afford new entitlements; hell, we can't afford the old ones either! We can't even afford to defend our Country from radical terrorists! With this president, we are doomed to suffer bombings at our malls, churches, schools, public places, etc. The reinstitution of policy that treats the issue of domestic terrorism as a "law enforcement" problem will make us more susceptible to attacks domestically.

He receives the Nobel "Appease" prize and that is supposed to make me feel secure in my own Country?

Re: Power Line - A mixed blessing at best for the president

Late in commenting, but Obama will never arrive with the "peace." This is a Nobel "Appease" Prize and nothing more. Obamapeaser satisfies the Europeans who are so filled up with envy and jealousy towards America that they are actually rooting for her collapse to make themselves feel better. The problem is, when we can't fight a war (apparent now with Afghanistan) who will defend them and their cultures? No one. It will be Sharia law for all in Europe; they are too blind to see it.

By the way, what about Afghanistan? There are military men and women calling for "back-up" but no one seems to be listening and reacting to their calls. So, are we to throw these honorable citizens under the bus, too?

Re: Power Line - Whose Dreams?

I've never read the book. Not interested in it one bit. I can't understand how an individual whose father left him at 2 years old, the mother raised him along with the white grandparents, could write ANYTHING about the absentee father and NOTHING about the mother or grandmother. For what purpose would you ignore the two or three people in your life who provided for you and loved you and glorify the one who left? Maybe the book doesn't glorify the absentee father, but I couldn't read it because of the paternalistic/pandering title!

Does this make sense?

Re: Power Line - Unacceptable

Remember, Obama's economy is the "government." Peterson, David Walker, Warren Buffet and others to come forward and discuss whether Obama's reform is what they had in mind when they criss-crossed the Country with the I. O. U. S. I say CALL them out and let these so called "experts" explain themselves and Obama's reform activity.

I thought the key word in their documentary was "fix" not expand.

Re: Power Line - All he is saying

I think there is a lot of work being done outside of the schools. Each and every one of us has an obligation to discuss our Constitution, principles, and values with our children, our nieces and nephews, and grandchildren. If the schools don't do it, we have to. I, for one, presented to our girl scout troop the Charters of Freedom and pocket Constitutions along with "How We Pick a President," and discussions of past history, past elections, and how to keep what the founding fathers gave us. We've discussed/learned about George Washington's Rules of Civility, Thomas Jefferson, Henry Clay, Ben Franklin, and many others.

The "standards" for troop activities prohibits political "indoctrination" and endorsement, though. That was no concern of mine - I see it as my duty to educate and inform the youth and encourage political thought and participation.

The National Girl Scout organization had as its primary focus last spring, "How to Change the World by Going Green." What do you think I did with that? Not as much as what I listed above.

Re: Power Line - The art of corruption

There is not a single original idea emanating from Obama's White House. He is doing nothing more than copying "Roosevelt's policies" with a shot of "Chamberlain."

Under the heading MUSEUMS+ATTRACTIONS in the Washington WHERE, Sept. 2009 issue:

"STIMULUS PACKAGE: In the darkest days of the Great Depression, the U.S. Public Works of Art Program provided jobs for artists and lifted the spirit of America. In the mid-30s, a million-plus dollars supported 3,749 artists told to "embellish public buildings." Of the 15,000 works they created, 56 paintings comprise 1934: A New Deal for Artists at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Grouped by themes like portraits, leisure, labor, cityscapes and country scenes, the colorful, upbeat, "can-do" works outnumber the bleaker visions.

Harry Gottlieb's icehouse workers toil as if choeographed Julia Eckel's "Radio Broadcast" makes visible the entertainers who, like FDR with his "chats" beam reassurance into every home. Lily Furedi's "Subway" depicts a life-goes-on mileu with more optimism than despair. These pictures (most by unknowns) remind 75 years later that, with dilligence and pluck the American enterprise survives hard times. Jean L. Cohen.

Mr. Beck had a show where he portrayed some of the above paintings on the buildings of New York City. Amazing, how sometimes what you stumbled upon as a child reading history books and other publications, others are finally stumbling upon it today and making "hay" about it. What's the old saying, "no matter how much things change, they stay the same?"

I always thought the Arts was the "hoity-toity's" way of thumbing their noses in the masses' faces - "see, we can still get ours in your capitalist society, so take this."

Oh, on page 23 there is an ad to visit, "Madame Tussaud's, more than just a wax museum." The presidents pictured, Clinton, Reagan, Kennedy, FDR, and next to him Obama. Some in our society have been taught from grade school on that all people who have more than they are somehow evil and corrupt. They refuse to acknowledge the fact that within themselves lies the power to achieve and succeed. They are taught to look to government to solve every problem that arises in their daily lives.

They translate their feelings of inadequacy into emotions of bitter jealousy and class envy. They buy into the argument that "society" is somehow against them. They become followers instead of leaders, because to be a leader they would have to admit to guiding principles in their lives. They learn to use the poor as a means to their own ends.

I've watched the ACORN organization. Since the "great society" era. Let's see - the former Welfare Rights Organization - encouraged by the Democratic party and looney people on the left. The mantra became "sign up" for your "government benefits - you're entitled." Instead of education it became indoctrination. That's why so many of the poor blacks' and poor whites' blood lines are still in poverty today. The poor did nothing more than trade one form of poverty (lack of opportunity) for another (a "rightful check"). Along with the Democratic party and the organization of the poor, power was attained and entire generations have not moved into the middle class.

I've always looked up to the "rich white" people. The aspiration to succeed and achieve is a no-brainer to me. Who aspires to "get a rightful check" from others? Somehow, it's not only immoral, it's sentencing your very soul to death.

Re: Power Line - A "compromise" Republicans must resist

The WSJ reported a couple of weeks ago that the mandate to purchase health insurance would be legislated if the insurance providers would cover pre-existing conditions. This was supposedly agreed to in November, 2008. Remember, shortly after inaug. it was agreed to by the pharmaceuticals to support health care reform to the tune of billions of advocating dollars and reduction in drug therapy costs.

All of this is just a "show" to the public. The issues have long since been agreed to and decided. The only thing left to do is put it to pen and paper and a vote.

Freedoms are lost way before it becomes evident that they are lost. Back room deals are made before the public even gets wind of it. We just think the Constitution means "we the people." The politicos believe they are the "we" and the people are just the citizens.

Re: Power Line - Has Obama been neutralized for now?

There are four editorials in the Wall Street Journal - two Thursday, one Friday, and one on Monday - about his health care reform/insurance proposals that state why he should lose this battle. I read these picking out the facts and verifying them as best I can. On Thursday it was Medicare is No Model for Health Reform , and Medicare for Dummies; on Friday, it was Read the Union Health-Care Label; on Monday it was Fact-Checking the President on Health Insurance.

Remember when the House (Waxman) demanded the insurance companies furnish thousands of documents to them for review? Well, I thought then it was nothing more than a "witch" hunt and search of fodder to support their allegations against those "evil insurance providers." The article spells out how Mr. Obama came to highlight the cases of the Illinois man and the Texas woman. The issue at hand is "rescission" by the insurance company and whether it impacts enough Americans to justify the complete takeover of the industry.

I'm sure there have been problems with attaining benefits from providers and reviews of contracts, etc. But, the fact is that personal emotions aside, there will be more harm done to the general population as a whole if the Nation marches to universal health care coverage. The facts are that the government-appointed bureaucrats will determine "best practices" and "cost effectiveness" and there is more inherent danger in this than the insurance companies operating within the parameters of state regulations.

In the one situation that I know of that dealt with "transplant" of an organ where the insurance was furnished through the person's employer (a government agency) it was the elected politician that caused the denial of the transplant with the "window of opportunity" being lost due to his untimely response. And, there would not have ever been an issue except for the fact that this "elected politician" promised to "change the provider" if he were elected! He got elected, the employees got screwed and one lost his life.

There are lots and lots of dirty politicians lining their pockets with our health care coverages. Just because the government runs the show completely, won't change this.

Re: Power Line - Indicting the Messenger

The ACORN offices are "public offices" paid for with public funds. These individuals were being "paid" with taxpayer money and in effect, operating in the "public." One objective of ACORN is to attain "public supported" housing or people who come into their "public" office.

Sorry to say, the crew was only filming the "public" in a "public" place. If you watch the videos closely, you will see that all advice given was pretty much unsolicited and in the end, they asked the couple to "join" ACORN to facilitate the "public housing" process.

Clearly a RICO investigation is warranted at these offices all across the Nation.

As far as voter registration fraud, it is a felony to "misrepresent" your right to vote. These individuals knew they were committing fraud. The purpose of fines and punishment for the "misrepresentation" is to insure that the county election clerks are not overwhelmed with the processing of "fraudulent" registrations. If they can't do their jobs and follow the procedures in place for closing the "books" timely, the risk of invalid elections occurring becomes likely. The fact that no "fraudulent" vote took place does not support or mitigate the act of "registration fraud."

ACORN knows all of this. So does Obama. A former ACORN lawyer. They also know how the registration process works and the timing processes needed to ensure a valid election.

I say they all need to be investigated and if found guilty, put them behind bars right where they belong.

Re: Power Line - How Big Was the Crowd?

The crowd was large. People started gathering at 8:00 a.m. at the Federal Plaza/Triangle. We were up front and didn't start walking back towards the Washington Monument until around 3:30. The Mall was full up to 9th Street. People were lined up forty to fifty deep on both sides of the Capitol and then all the way out to 9th Street on both sides of the street and in the street. It was difficult to make your way back to 9th Street. I would estimate the crowd at about 150,000 to 200,000.

The issues brought forth covered everything from the TARP bailouts, the stimulus bill, healthcare bill, general spending, waste and fraud, ACORN fraud, Medicare, Social Security, the Czars, the Constitution and many, many others.

There were elderly people, young people, middle-age people, union members, disabled people in wheel chairs, entire families, and every ethnicity in America. At one time the announcer said that 45 states were represented including Hawaii and Alaska!

The signs were hand-made. The only professionally made sign I saw was from a supporter of health care reform. And there were thousands of signs, banners, and flags.

The message was delivered loud and clear from this crowd. The spending by Congress is out of control and the people want sanity to return! Capital markets are not evil! Government run health care is not great! And, the politicians need to uphold the Constitutional mandates of limited government! The march towards an increasing socialist state is not acceptable! The czars must go! Too many to list them all!

Re: Power Line - Obama's Speech: Did It Help Him?

When has a politician ever wanted an "honest" debate?

Re: Power Line - Obama's Speech: Did It Help Him?

Missed opportunity that's for sure. I couldn't watch it, but was there anything on how to pay for it besides eliminating "waste?" That won't work. The allmighty dollar is a big incentive for the insurance companies to be efficient. There's never any incentive for government to be efficient with tax dollars since they operate on a continuous "going concern" guaranteed source of revenue.

The argument that Medicare is more efficient at the delivery of health care is ridiculous; if that's the case, why is he proposing to eliminate "waste" and "fraud?" There will be so much fraud and waste if universal health coverage is implemented the quality of care will be driven in a downward spiral that people lives will be put in jeopardy. And the fraud just won't be in the area of $1,500 bed pans.

But, with no "going concern" issues, the taxes will increase to a level that will destroy our economy and will likely, never recover.

The Heritage Foundation has a good analysis on why you can't compare the Medicare delivery system with the insurance companies' delivery system when discussing efficiency in administrative costs. Since this will be the next "talking point" for garnering support of health care reform, I guess we'll just have to pull it out and reread it.

Re: Power Line - Labor Yes, Unions No

Maybe it's because people are waking up to the fact that if we implement "universal/socialized medcine" they won't get their bedpans cleaned by the SEIU/AFSCME members. "A communist" to "lots of communists."

Is he trying to say it's no big deal and now that they are no longer in Russia, they had to go somewhere so the USA was acceptable?

Re: Power Line - Accentuate the Positive

"I'm Barack Obama, and I pledge allegience to the flag of the United States of America........."
Now that kind of speech would have traction and staying power.

Re: Power Line - What Van Jones signifies

To Caley: Yes, FDR was a communist and did surround himself with communists who studied at the feet of Stalin.

"The progressive Lincoln Stebbens had penned his famous summary of the achievement of revolutionary Russia, a summary that rang in the ears of the 1920s travelers: "I have been over to the future and it works," Steffens also said, "I would like to spend the evening of my life watching the morning of a new world."

Bob La Follette, Roger Baldwin, Emma Goldman, Prof. R. G. Tugwell, Thomas Campbell, Paul Douglas, and lots more. You can find the details in Amity Shlaes book, The Forgotten Man.

Lets see, FDR told the farmers to slaughter 6 million pigs to "save the Country." Of course, the price of meat raised, the unemployed couldn't afford it anyway, and sad to say, people starved.

Today, in the WSJ, the Agriculture Department ordered farmers to slaughter 115 million pigs. They, also, didn't have the money to purchase the excess supply, they said; but, they borrowed it anyway.

When will we learn? Not this time around. "Stock the freezer and the pantry, my dear; another Roosevelt is here; he doesn't believe the slogan, "a chicken in every pot," ; I'm afraid of what he's delivering - prosperity, it is not!"
