While I agree in general that "by the time a kid is 6, he's pretty much the person he is going to be", I don't think it is 100%. I am fairly confident I am not the same person I was 15, 25, or 35 years ago. And, hopefully, most of that change is for the better. :-)

I've always believed that kids are much more adaptable than their parent. The 'stability' recommendation came from parents who were just darn tired of their kids changing too much.

I also know in my heart that there is a right time for every change. Asking Paco to dump the Binkie a few months ago (versus last week) would likely have cost you 6 more months of obstinate 'no, I don't wanna' discussions.
