As an 8th grader in 1982 who went to school at LMS when it was mixed with "high school grades"(1981-82)...it was a breath of fresh air when the "high schoolers" went to the new "South Whidbey High School". The 6th-8th graders got to break and could feel comfortable which helped to relax and learn. I hope if they do mingle the high/middle schools they keep them very separate.

Yes, there are a bunch of slobs out there...but not a good reason "to be down on the traditional celebration". Too bad they don't pick up after themselves...but I don't want the tradition to go away, I guess there are good people like yourself that picks up after the dead beats (happens every day on our roads too)...I would be happy to join you to keep the 4th what it is..

I don't think you understood the point I was trying to make and I am not going to try to explain it to you. But we are not talking about Western Washington we are talking about Whidbey Island.

Jamie, I see that as a bit short sighted. Land being developed has slowed down, but it will pick up again it always does and there is plenty to develop. I believe we need to have some preservation in place, it may not seem that big of deal now but it will be when my children & grand children want to have a place to walk, ride whatever it may be...I remember when I could ride my horse from Greenbank to Freeland on Honeymoon Bay Road, no problem(1982-1986). And ride through the woods that are still not developed from Crawford Road to Langley no problem but property owners now fore bid it (1980-20??). The property I purchased and put my house on in 1992 had a horse trail/walking trail through it, people would ride from our property through to "Pioneer Park" to Langley through the trails. We welcomed it BUT all the property behind us was developed in 2000, no more trails for walking, riding, biking etc..DONE. Trust me I am for development and advancement but I do believe we have to keep areas preserved for recreation if possible. I work in the construction industry, it is my lively hood! We need to have areas for development but we have to preserve areas at the same time. It is a fine balance...and hopefully we can do before our children's children have no place to escape to.

Wow, I did not read the whole letter to the editor yet...I will when I finish writing my opinion. I got the notice and my reaction was "GREAT"! That is a way to save money, it might not be a lot but so many of those envelopes go in the trash or recycle because like me, it is paid through my mortgage company or many people pay online. It is a total waste of money to send those envelopes out! Why beat them up for trying to save a buck? It is a very small amount of money, well under .50 cents for those that need to put their check in an envelope.

I guess my point is rant on a different article! This was a wise decision and your making it negative!

One thing I would like to point out, when the traffic lights are without power, those areas become a 4 way stop. Apparently a lot of people are not aware of that. I am surprised there were not any accidents at the light today. Half of the people driving "on" the highway did not stop.

I think there are a lot of ignorant people that don't realize how many people they deal with on a daily basis that smoke MJ...I personally don't smoke but I know plenty that do. If they didn't, they would be drinking (which in my opinion can be much more harmful) or using prescription drugs to deal with anxiety, depression, pain etc...I would ride ANY DAY with someone who has smoked mj than someone that had been drinking. If you take a good look around you on any given day, there would be at least half of the people you see that smoke mj...and you don't even know it. They maintain good businesses, volunteer for the community and live normal lives. But all those people that you are around that you don't realize smoke mj could end up in jail because what...they have found a way to relieve pain with out paying a doctor thousands of dollars or a way to relieve anxiety and depression with out giving doctors thousands of dollars. I say YES...make it legal...it would be about time!

Ed, I just got done reading some of your posts on the Langley forum (and here on the Record)...what's left of it anyways. Apparently you could not speak your mind there unless everyone agreed and was super friendly (which doesn't always work if you have a difference of opinion). I think you are fighting for Langley merchants and I am not one...but I do think you type (speak) too much so no one hardly ever "hears" you. But I do get your concept and I think it is great idea to keep pushing to have Langley be noticed on the highway, advertisements...etc. I am one of those folks who travel through out Washington and just drive for entertainment, I must say I have missed plenty of opportunities to see great little towns because I had no idea they were there. La Conner is a perfect example....there are signs, pointing you out of the normal drive to see.

I thought the article really was a great for the bookstore, it showed they were willing to come in for a customer with a phone call on a Sunday...!

I also thought the article was spot on about business being closed when "visitors" are in town, business will NOT get those folks to spend any time (or $$) in their shops if they are closed. Most of us on the island understand stores in Langley may not be open until 10 or later and will wait to run to Langley to get our business done. But most vacationers do not understand that, they are coming more than likely from town where stores are open at 8 or 9 am.

I do understand what your saying...I GET it! I think it would be great if everyone paid in cash...but that is not what is happening these days...it is easier to spend with your little card than go to the bank and get cash. So it really comes down to being mad at "visa, mastercard, etc..." for the charges they charge businesses....not at the consumer!

I understand your concern...as a small business owner myself "I get it" but we have to deal it! We HAVE to adjust with credit cards etc...it is the way it is! It cost money to make money and credit card fees are one of them, BUT the folks that can use their cards (myself included) in your store will probably spend a little more! I hardly ever carry cash...but spend plenty with my debit card! Ask my husband!

Most of us don't carry cash anymore...that is just the way it works, unfortunately for a business it could be a drawback, but you get a lot more sales because folks CAN use there cards

You go! I do not own a business in Langley, but I think what your doing is a terrific idea! We need all the help we can get generating revenue on the island and pointing out Langley will only help keep people visiting the island longer! As far as Clinton goes, it is not desirable because you can't "walk" anywhere unless you are crossing the highway, no hotel/motels, restaurants not much of anything really...sorry.

It would be my belief that who?, their ages? and their prior health issues?are a matter of personal privacy and are not open to the public.Of course everyone would like to know who is sick and with what (to avoid it if contagious)...but how would you like it if your name, age, how long you were sick, what prior health issues you had and where you lived was put in the paper when you passed on?? Come on!

They (planters) may not be perfect, but they do make Freeland look a lot friendlier! I walk Freeland on a daily basis and I have to admit I was a bit skeptical at first, but those planters break up the all the parking lots and that was all it was in that area... UGLY! I watched as they put them together and they spent several volunteer hours and many days installing the planters. To all the complainers, you could always become a member of Friends of Freeland (all volunteer I believe) and you would have your own voice and input I'm sure they would welcome you and you could help with the decision making! And no I am not a member, but now that I think about it I may become a volunteer!
