That's a common problem if you're using Safari. It renamed the extension from ipsw to zip (since in reality ipsw files are actually zip archives)). So just rename it back from .zip to .ipsw. Or use a browser other than Safari to download.

it's supposed to be an .ipsw file.

Try to right click on the link and select to "save as". I tested it and it works fine.

Alternatively try to see what extension it currently has. Try renaming the file extension to .ipsw

Did you try right clicking and selecting to "save as"?

Yup, very good point in case. If you know what you're doing craigslist, kijiji or ebay are a better choice. Though not everyone has the patience to deal with listing, selling, getting the payment etc... whereas Gazelle takes care of all that and it even offers a free box to ship your phone in.

Basically if I was selling my iPhone, i'd certainly use eBay (it actually gives a better sales margin than craigslist/kijiji and currently offers 5 free listings a month). But if I suggested my mom or my g/f to sell her old iPhone or any other cellphone, I'd totally suggest using Gazelle.

The problem is that a lot of people do not have the time/means to sell their old iPhone via B2B so their old devices just sit around collecting dust after they upgrade to a new iPhone/whatever model. That's where Gazelle is super useful, since it requires minimum interaction and gives you a choice to get rid of your old idevice easily, without having to deal with ebay/craigslist/kijiji listings, scammers, shipping, listing charges, communication with buyer, etc.

However, the MAIN point of this article was more to track the evolution of average prices for older iPhone models over the last 6 months than anything else. Since Gazelle won't pay you more than it can make its profit off (they actually resell these second hand devices mostly via eBay), its prices can (arguably) serve as indicative for the entire second hand iPhone market trends (not the actual prices, but actual TRENDS of prices).

And since the prices went up since July 2010, we can reasonably conclude that iPhones have a very good resale value, no matter how old they are. That's about it:)

No, it won't work. Or rather it will work, but only partially.

Redsnow CAN give you a (tethered) jailbreak.

But ultrasn0w doesn't support iphone 4 yet at ios 4.1 or above (if you already upgraded to it) so you WON'T be able to unlock it..

The guide above is only for iphone 3g and iphone 3gs.

Jailbreak does not mean unlock.

Jailbreak allows ultrasn0w to work.

However iOS 4.2.1 is not supported by the current version of ultrasn0w. Hence you cannot unlock your iPhone atm.

Basically just use your gpois0ned iOS 4.1 for now.

DO NOT upgrade to iOS 4.2.1.

Once ultrasn0w is available for iOS 4.2.1 we'll post an update here with further instructions.

From the looks of it you'll need to use a new revision of pwnage tool or sn0wbreeze to make a custom firmware when pwnage/snowbreeze for 4.2.1 are available so as to keep your baseband, and then you could use the upcoming ultrasn0w to unlock.

Well, if the upcoming version of Ultrasn0w will not work, maybe the next one will :)

Apart of that there ARE some ways to downgrade your baseband to an ultrasn0w compatible version -- but from what I hear they're pretty risky, tedious and require quite a bit of work on your part. Never tried them myself though since thankfully I've avoided this situation despite having an unlocked i4 (I just keep it at iOS 4.01 for now).

The sad part is that no one knows at the moment... probably not even the iPhone Dev Team folks since they still did not finish updating ultrasn0w for the new iOS.

Although you say that you have an Phone 3G, so there's a good chance that Ultrasn0w for iOS 4.2.1 (http://www.iphoneworld.ca/n... ) will be able to fix the problem. iPhone 3G basically is easier to unlock than the i3GS/i4, so keep your fingers crossed.

You can jailbreak it no problem.

And no you should not upgrade first. Just download pwnage tool and use it on your existing firmware version.

Although if jailbreak is all you need, I'd recommend using Limera1n or Greenpois0n instead as they are easier to work with. You can get either of these in our downloads section: http://www.iphoneworld.ca/d...
