Any system whether Google, Powerset, Cuil or Wolfram Alpha cannot afford to not use NLP. In fact all of them use it to a certain extent.

Isn't the first equation having some typo ? ell_01(y,p) = 1, y NOT_EQUAL_TO p and 0 otherwise.

You got it wrong. It is precisely this reason why the app is there. If you have only a single girl, you can easily remember the days. Very funny app though. And if nothing else, Apple keeps us entertained by facilitating such innovation :)

It would be interesting to see whether it was just a spike due to holiday spend or the substantial increase in the customer base due to increased sale of iPod touch and iPhones during the season. This is great news for mobile devs. Apple has really revolutionalised the mobile industry. Next we can expect more "channels" of app distribution and more value added services coming to users and more revenue for the operators. Pre-iPhone days, mobile app dev was so awkward - remember Quallcomm Brew process!
