I find it more ridiculous that the writer felt the need--in so many words--to respond to the media outlets. It just propagated more non-news about a non-news event. The Atlantic should do better.

Re: Hillary Clinton’s Appearance on <i>Between Two Ferns</i> Wasn’t Brave

No, I got that, and the coliseum was my metaphor. I was reacting to the seriousness of the reviewer, who is taking the show, and the other reviewers, far too seriously. That said, you might have a point if the article wasn't headlined as "Hillary Clinton's Appearance on Between Two Ferns Wasn't Brave."

Re: Hillary Clinton’s Appearance on <i>Between Two Ferns</i> Wasn’t Brave

What an utterly meaningless--and ridiculously long and serious--review to a very brief satirical interview. Hillary "wasn't brave?" Gimme a break. This show isn't intended as coliseum for a politician to prove their mettle under the fire of Galifianakis' clowning. This is so embarrassing for The Atlantic.

Re: Stop Cheering for the Old 'Hands Off My Daughter!' Shtick

Thank you!

Re: Stop Cheering for the Old 'Hands Off My Daughter!' Shtick

Yes. Every state has its areas with hillbillies and tea party buffoons. Some states are even overrun by such buffoonery (red states). If what the NYC folks here are saying is true, the sheer numbers of its enlightened voting population should be enough to give NYC the government--and influence--it wants. Yet, less than 28% vote. So what, pray tell, are you all bitching about? You have the government you deserve.

Besides, after LI is underwater and you've thrown the last sandbag around Manhattan, you might want to think about being more cordial as you're paddling your artisanal row boats upstate. I mean, these hillbillies have guns! ;)

Re: Upstate New York Secessionists Demand Freedom From City They Mooch Off Of

Tell you what, if NYC starts paying more taxes, it can take more from the expenditure pot. :) I'm not sure what to think about the "you're taking money from NYC" however--that seems to falling back to the author's generalizations and characterizations (admittedly I did do the same with the cronut comment, but it was a playful jab that Gothamist frequently makes of NYC denizens). You know we're not all tea partiers and welfare recipients, right? We also have a significant number of NYC one percenters in their second, third or fourth homes up here. And there is a substantial workforce that commutes to NYC everyday from upstate.

I probably would have enjoyed the article if it would have targeted the secessionists themselves rather than "everything upstate." I mean, dang, there are some nice places: Saratoga Springs, the Finger Lakes region, the Hudson Valley gentrified towns, for example. Yeah, tax laws need work (I pay hella taxes, btw), but that doesn't mean that we all need or want to be be NYC teat suckers.

Point taken about the reservoirs and taxes, however. See, some upstaters are even reasonable, even if we are all on the dole! ;)

Re: Upstate New York Secessionists Demand Freedom From City They Mooch Off Of

Given that about 64 percent of the state's population is located in NYC metropolitan area, and 53 percent in NYC alone, it shouldn't be seen as a horrible disparity that NYC pays 44 percent of the state's taxes. Upstate also supplies things like NYC's potable water (we try to avoid peeing in said reservoirs just for you). Oh yes, and the notion that NYC has no influence on the three wise men/guys in Albany is laughable. But sure, make sweeping characterizations about all upstaters based on the actions of a few teabaggers while nibbling your cronut and sipping your artisanal coffee in the relative comfort that your financial-sector overlords have created for you. You, after all, dear journalist, are truly living the dream.

Re: Robin Versus Brittany: The Double Standard For Suicide

Possibly the most simplistic thing I've read on this topic:

"Either life is worth living, regardless of pain and tribulation, or it’s not. We can’t have it both ways. "

Yes, we can have it both ways--just not in individual cases. The case of the bullied teen is vastly different than the case of Brittany Maynard. One stands a good shot at recovery and alleviated suffering, the other does not.

It's attractive to have such an either/or view of things--it makes your world simpler, but it doesn't necessarily make it easier for the folks that are suffering.

Re: AngularJS in Depth – Part 1

Great explanations, Suhair!

Re: Operation Baby ~ ONLINE BABY SHOWER

You are amazing. I have my own biases--maybe because I was forced to do the
ASP.Net/VS dance for a while in one of my jobs. You're a talented guy; no
doubt you'll have successful results with whatever tool set you use. In any
case I enjoy your blog/tweets.

Best wishes,

-Matt

Re: Should I use ASP.NET's default membership provider system, or roll my own?

Ugh. I hate ASP.Net--in particular all the code it automagically dumps on the page. I also hate using the slow and cumbersome Visual Studio which is hard to program ASP.Net without. Go open source--may be a little more work, but you'll take more pride in your work and not feel like you need to take a shower afterward.
