If you have a 200 amp service you need the 200 amp transfer switch for the utility connection.  If you compute the load maximum load on the residence accrding to NEC 220, the generator only has to supply that amount; perhaps ?120 amps?  That is still a LARGE generator.  If the transfer switch can contol some of the load, perhaps shutting down the electric heat or water heater or etc, then the generator must only be suzed for the remaining load. &lt;br&gt;A manual transfer swich can have a plackard that says: TURN OFF HEAT, RANGE, WATER, HEATER, DRYER BEFORE CONNECTING GENERATOR.&lt;br&gt;The automatic switch can connect anythingthat is on the load side. After the pumps are set, it is often necessary to 'tweak' the alignment of the conduit.
