From what I'm reading, Home Premium does not support dynamic disks, thus does not support mirroring. You may want to confirm this for yourself - I couldn't find a source to confirm this information direct from Microsoft.

Re: Out of the Loop?

Good point, bad attention to detail on my part.

My sentiment still stands in regards to most power users and overclockers. The only justification I can see for that is because RAM is so cheap right now, but still there are more crucial places you can put your money that you want to invest in computer parts... I'd personally stick it away in an SSD fund.

On linux, I'm running an XP virtual machine over 75% of the time I'm running this T400 with 2GB, and I never run low on RAM. Most users wouldn't be running a virtual machine. I don't know what most users could be doing on a desktop machine to require more than 4GB.

Seems it could only be a wise choice in very edge cases for users with very demanding, non-average application requirements.

Re: Review and Overclocking results of the Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R Motherboard

I'd recommend asking that question in this forum thread, as it has more details also:
http://www.ocforums.com/sho...

Re: MSI Mega Stick1 - Faulty Connector, Cheap Fix

Mike, thank you for bringing this article to our attention. Overclockers.com went thru a migration from a static site to a Joomla powered site, and some articles didn't migrate fully. Since you mentioned this article, I went ahead and fixed the article so the rest of the information your looking for is now included.

In the near future, we're migrating to wordpress - so hopefully as a side effect that will also fix semi-broken articles like this one.

Thanks again!

Re: Using Your Old Socket 775 Mounting Hardware On Your Brand New P55 Setup

sno.lcn from the forum wrote this article, he is listed very clearly as the author. There are 4 pictures of this custom mounting hardware which sno.lcn designed himself. Also, you refer to a link to the original article that is locked - there is no link to any locked thread. There is a link to sno.lcn's forum user profile, where you can contact him if you'd like to. The forums require you to sign up, as forums always do.

As for your other comments, this is a community site - if you want to improve things or contribute, contact me at spamisyummy@gmail.com and you can get involved. Your window of vulnerability is inordinately high, considering your running a platform thats inordinately vulnerable.

Writing a trojan which activates a keylogger that activates when you visit certain banking websites it monitors then uploads that captured keylogging back over the internet... Isn't hard.

This is one example, from 2004:
http://www.viruslist.com/en...

Any virus doing the same thing today is far more advanced, tho they commonly use similar tactics. Without a virus application, it'd be pure chance by which you'd realize you were infected - a good trojan doesn't cause any problems and does its job quietly.

Other than that, I agree an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Problem is that attacks are so sophisticated now you can literally get drive-by exploited without performing any questionable activities and while being a responsible user.

I still run windows in a VM, and I use antivirus on that installation, but I rarely if ever access the internet from it - Not a chance I'm doing any online banking or sensitive/"secure" transactions from it.

Re: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition

PII overclocking results thread in the forum:
http://www.ocforums.com/sho...

PII comparison with i7 in the forum:
http://www.ocforums.com/sho...

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Chart

I think you mean it's generally pretty foolish to upgrade a WINDOWS install from one major version to the next.

Linux upgrades are typically more incremental in nature due to the way updates are handled with their development cycles - if you keep up with the updates on a regular basis, it's nowhere near as monolithic of a change as it is on a Windows Environment switching between major releases. That's because linux distros typically do annual, bi-annual, or rolling release schedules - they aren't going years between major versions because they don't operate under the same financial axioms which Microsoft is constrained by.

For your friend, you should have him stop by the Alt OS forum at OC Forums - doing a clean install likely isn't necessary... Even if the system isn't bootable, you can boot from a LiveCD and chroot into your linux environment to recover from the issue. From there, he can pull the relevant log files and we can determine what went wrong and correct it. (chrooting isn't even necessary to get the log files, just a liveCD - chroot may be used to ultimately resolve his problem tho, depending on the current state of his system.)

Re: Desktops Dead?

Are we coming full circle Joe?

When I joined the forums in 2002 after a couple years of reading the frontpage, there was a lot of talk about struggling with the new size of the forums. The activity was much higher than when it launched, and many of the original folks felt as tho their close knit community had changed - it had, it was bigger and less personal on average.

Reading slashdot today, I saw this quote in reference to wikipedia and the nature of growing communities, which I believe applies somewhat to our topic at hand:
"As you run out of food, people start competing for that food, and that results in a slowdown in population growth and means that the stronger, more well-adapted part of the population starts to have more power."

While the overclocking community may be shrinking compared to what we perceive as its peak some years ago, going forward the more fit and well adapted online presences will carry on with more influence across the community than ever before. It could also mean we get back to a tighter knit group of friends who share more closely in our challenges and triumphs.

I'm not entirely convinced our enthusiast community is getting any smaller, or that the DIY build crowd is shrinking, but even if it were... I see positives that come along with that also. Those of us who enjoy the fundamental items which initially got us into this hobby, will keep doing it and sharing our results and advice.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Chart

I'd read an article on running fiber or a wireless ISP. Get it to Joe and I bet he'd post it within a week.

It's hard producing interesting content on your own every day of the week, and I'm sure a break would be welcome.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Chart

I'll side-step the vitriol, which you seem to have recognized on your own thru hindsight.

How can you be part of the solution? Develop and submit articles, or gather content and get it submitted.

If you don't have the time or resources to develop and submit articles, I see you mentioned the forums - there are plenty of people doing interesting things there which I haven't seen on the frontpage. Joe doesn't have time to scour the forums for golden nuggets. Contact the people who are doing great stuff, and ask them if they'd be interested in submitting their stuff to Joe as an article - if not, ask if you can write an article or summary about what they are doing for the frontpage.

The highest points this site ever hit were due to community involvement - we made it into the major tech rags when the cpudatabase was hot, before it was overshadowed by hwbot (but we were doing it first). The most interesting technical articles I've ever read here were user contributed also.
