To an extent, yes. With Candy Says we're mostly making decisions based on what we want to do rather than what we think our audience wants. Hopefully that makes us interesting and authentic rather than pig-headed and pretentious, and we'll end up with an audience that really digs what we do.

We'll probably release the album on CD eventually, but for us it's not the most interesting part of being a band when we can put on crazy gigs, make tapes, films and other fun projects.

Of course everyone should always be able to listen to music, but there's plenty to go around and it's silly to try to appeal to everybody these days. We like bands who release tapes, so we release tapes. Hopefully some other people will like us too. Most will probably think it's a bit twattish. ;)

I just can't help seeing CDs as an annoyingly inefficient way of transferring digital audio files, especially when someone is looking at a digital download page and asking if it's available on CD. That's like asking a busker to stop singing, write down the song and post it to you.

It seems from the comments there that Sweden might be an exception with Spotify because most of the country subscribes!

For a fully transparent example, Zoe Keating recently published her Spotify statements – she made less than $300 in 6 months (for 72,800 plays) compared to $46,000 from iTunes in the same period:
