I grew up in the community of DAR, was the daughter of a veteran, married a veteran, and is the aunt of PFC Seth Stanton, who was killed in Iraq three years ago. I am so grateful to you for writing this article. After Seth's death I have struggled with these national holidays because I know intimately the great grief and pain that these holidays cover up with great fanfare. There are and were grieving families behind each of these holidays. Thank you for your article for sharing your truth it helps me not feel so alone in the world. Blessings

No Bluetooth? Loud talking is disruptive, period. With the earpiece I get plausible deniability. I could be talking to a real person, a real someone else on the other end of the line. Sure the laundromat killed my headset a year ago. But why replace it when the magic remains? Wear it and the usual bystander freakout never happens, instead mere annoyance, irritated glances. And, bonus, no police intervention.

But seriously. I'm glad you found strategies that work for you. Go for it. And it's good that you want to help others. But it feels like a tent revival here. Or maybe political a convention. Both suffer from hubris. There isn't any listening happening here. And as they say here in the burnt-over district, "I'm all set." I'll stop by in a decade and see if you still know everything about everybody and how to fix them.

The bad apples are in Denver. In general Colorado police are courteous. They protect and serve. Not in Denver. Lived there a decade. Not one interaction was positive in the Denver area. Not one was worthy of respect. They aren't out there for your safety. In Denver the law is tool of harassment, for a twisted agenda or personal amusement. The kids there know it because it's impossible not to notice. Police don't even pretend to be the good guys.

Ignorance is bliss. Congratulations for your blissful ignorance. But know that your ignorant advise is profoundly... ignorant. Learn to listen. You are surrounded by people in need of help. You don't have a cure. Your words, impotent. Listen and believe the person, see the incredible human being that is an unseen hero. And then bare witness that you had nothing to do with any healing other than acknowledging human dignity where it already existed but maybe now just a little less alone. That is what you can do today for someone who is still with us.
