I'd posit that Microsoft is a technology company first and foremost, whereas Apple is a design company. I think you're also going to have to define "something great" more specifically. Something that fits your individual needs? But let's see Apple release hotfixes or hold training sessions for companies that depend on their software. That's something great that Microsoft does that just happens to not be part of your user scenario.
Agreed: Microsoft's branding is something of a mess. But good branding does not "something great" make; exhibit A: MobileMe.

I would contend that it's both. An example is when Apple made the menu bar translucent in Leopard; the company's customers and fans complained that it was unusable and not "Apple-like", and the Mac OS X team responded to those complaints in an update.

I totally agree that the direction that Apple is going is excellent. However, I know people that have been having problems with .Mac since forever, which makes it more than merely a launch-day problem.
I also think that the features, direction, and general awesomeness of what MobileMe and the 2.0 release promise have been written about to death elsewhere, and I'd rather offer my own, perhaps at least mildly unique two cents. And believe me, the 2.0 release IS awesome.

Not so: I think scalability is one of the biggest problems (if not THE biggest problem) that online services face. It's true that my perception of the launch skews towards what I hear on tech blogs, but if a service doesn't work, it doesn't work.

Let's be clear: I have an iPhone running v2.0, I love Apple products, and I'm seriously considering purchasing a MobileMe subscription. But I want to be able to do all of these things without worrying that my phone or email will be down for the day.

I think you also underestimate how highly businesses value stability. If Apple wants to make inroads into the enterprise market, it needs to bring its services up to the high standard it's already set with its hardware and software.

I'd also be interested to know which "fanatics" you're referring to. I don't think that I'm quick to criticize, I just expected better from Apple. It's precisely because us Mac and iPhone users have such a high standard for the company that it has such high quality.

I agree wholeheartedly with the onions and garlic. I happened to not have any when I made this particular dish, but I wished I did. Also, "when in doubt, just add wine" is surprisingly applicable to many aspects of life :-).
