I do have a somewhere different point of view, what with being a women in IT and trying to get more women into tech and all.

Firstly, I know my copy proposal isn't perfect. Mainly because it's impossible to figure out who is it aimed for. Yes, it does talk about professionals. But it also invites people who "don't know anything yet". And having spoken to someone from Hekovnik, I was told you don't have to be a professional to take the course, you just have to be familiar with basic programming concept. So this isn't a l33t class.

"Women serious about coding read specs in the same fashion as guys, there's no need to make it "nice" at the expense of the content of the course." Not saying women read specs differently. What I believe in is that we all learn better in a positive environment. Which is even more important for beginners. And while you might like the fact that you'll be digging into the unknown, a lot of people, female and male, might not. Why turn those away?

Mind you, my comments arose from talking to *actual woman* who want to learn more about Python (i.e. not total beginners), but were put off by the copy. Did you talk about any women about how you felt or is the comment just a reflection of how you, an insider, feel?

"Secondly, Python is not just about web development, emphasizing this would be a mistake." Sigh. The post wasn't about Python. Feel free to replace Python with Pink Ponies or something if it helps.

"The copy should be written coder friendly, gender is irrelevant and python compiler does not discriminate." The compiler doesn't discriminate, copy however does. Have you read this post? http://www.ere.net/2013/03/...

"Last, but not least. Slovenia is not India. Complaining about the possibilities for women in technology here is an insult to oppressed women, especially in the third world - they need help and support." That's like saying we shouldn't help the poor in Slovenia because the poor in India have it much worse. I can't do much about Indian women (wish I could), but I do have the opportunity to change my local community. Also, everyone loves talking about Marissa Mayer. How about all the women who left careers in tech because they were fed up with all the sexism? Look up some stats, Marissa is the exception, not the rule (unfortunately).

And your startup workshop at Roglab was also a wonderful exception to the rule, that's certainly good news! But more often than not, I'm still one of the few women at startup/tech events in Slovenia. Andraž did a wonderful analysis of the gender gap at the Faculty of CS in Ljubljana: http://andraz.wpengine.com/....

It's easy talking about how the "compiler" doesn't discriminate. Yes, code doesn't discriminate. The geek culture however does. Choosing a career in IT is still seen as an unusual choice for a women. Coding is still as something women don't do. Am I making this up? No, that's what women, applying for our Rails Girls workshops, wrote over and over again. They have good ideas, a desire to learn, but don't know where to start and don't feel welcome in various hackerspaces. We can either blame this on them because they're not more like we are, or we can extend a helping hand, make them feel welcome. I certainly think the startup/tech scene could benefit from more diversity and we should try everything in our power to make different people feel more welcome.

Sorry if this makes you feel uncomfortable (ah, scratch that, it should be an uncomfortable topic!), but the gender gap in IT is real and it's time we started talking about it. It's not that women aren't allowed to take CS courses or that computers shut down when they detect female presence. The problem is that women don't see a career in tech an appealing choice and that they don't feel welcome in the industry unless they become one of the boys. By 2015 we'll have up to a million of ICT job vacancies in Europe. We don't have enough white, straight geeks to fill that need. It's time to open the gates wider.

Re: Why The Hell Should I Pay Feedly For These Basic Features? - by Brian Proffitt

I have to wonder, Brian, have you ever tried making your own search engine or cloud service for that matter? These things aren't free, cheap or easy. It's like asking why journalists should get paid for writing articles if anyone can publish their opinions online these days.

And then there's this: "But I have to wonder if this is the way cloud services are going to go now—requiring payment for features that were once considered to be pretty much a given." A given? Seriously? We were (and still are) paying Google with our own personal information. And get served ads in return. Nice deal, eh? Personally, I'm happy to pay for a good service and avoid that kind of deal. And search is by no means just a little feature. Reeder and similar apps relied on Google's RSS infrastructure to make this work, they didn't have to build their own service from scratch like Feedly is doing with Feedly Cloud.

Re: Hiter prenos podatkov LTE/4G prihaja v Mobitelovo omrežje; kaj moram vedeti?

Re: iAlja: I quit Evernote: why a company shouldn't choose good looks over their core functionality

Yeah, I know Trello, but I primarily need a clean and simple writing tool, and iA Writer fits my needs perfectly :)

Re: Goodbye Blogger, Hello Octopres!

Thanks, Fleep! It would all be solved if they could just implement a user alert when the syncing doesn't work as expected (a relatively easy thing considering they keep a detailed log on the machine).

That said, while it was working, I was very happy with it. So if that part works for you, Evernote is a great choice, and you do get used to the UI.

Re: iAlja: How I found great chocolate in Brussels and glimpsed the flame of hope

Thanks, Chris!
