There are a lot of assumptions in your statement - including that all Christians agree that statements made about God in the Hebrew Scriptures represent God accurately (because that is not true that all Christians believe that).

Also it lacks the recognition that most of Christianity has agreed that laws in the Old Testament are generally only applicable to the nation of Israel - thus the reason many Christians are OK with tattoos and eating shellfish and wearing poly-cotton blend clothes - all prohibited activities in the Hebrew Scriptures.

It would be a blog post all it's own. I generally subscribe to the idea that Paul had no context for LGBT consensual loving relationships - that what he would have been exposed to was pederasty or slave rape or pagan temple worship. In other words, the New Testament is silent on same gender relationships, the same way it is silent on space travel.

So, if it is silent, then we are left to use principles derived from elsewhere in the New Testament to solve the ethical question.

Hi all,

Apologies for not interacting as much as I would wish with the comments - our staff had an all day meeting yesterday, and i am still trying to figure out how to navigate the rhythm of maintaining this site into my day.

A couple of responses to criticisms:

1) We take very seriously the safety of all our community members. I never said we didn't. We have strict policies and guidelines in place to make sure people are safe.

2) Yes, I didn't talk about that. There are lots of things I didn't talk about - it's a blog post, not a how to manual. The goal of this post wasn't to tell you how to do it - it was to tell you it can be done.

3) Recidivism rates on the whole for sex offenders are lower than nearly any crime except murder (murderers almost never re-offend). That is no way diminishing the seriousness of it if sex offenders *do* re-offend. Thus, our commitment to safety.

4) If you desired to make a sex offender re-offend, the near perfect way to make them do it is to cut them off from stability, community, housing, resources and employment. In other words, to put them on the sex offender registry. The registry, as it now exists, is harmful, it is destructive, and it ruins far more lives than it saves. There are better solutions that can accomplish what it was intended to.

5) What is far more important than the how-to's of such a thing is the will to do it. Once you realize that this need exists, and you believe that they are made in the image of God and thus deserving of love, you will find a way to make it happen.

That is how I always felt about the beat writers - Ginsburg, Kerouac, Snyder, et. al. They had this slacker image but were hugely prolific and widely published. That doesn't happen by accident.

Tony -

The people who click when you write controversial things don't care about you - they just want you to stimulate them. You are providing them a fix. If you don't, they will find someone else to do it.

The problem is, you have made a living being a stimulant pusher. Your identity is such. So, what would a kinder, gentler, more straightforward Tony look like? How would that Tony make a living? How would that Tony get validation, if not that people are talking about him?

I don't know, and ultimately, that is something you have to figure out.

Remember, though, that the people who love you - the real you, not the internet version of you - have your back, and would love you if you were the auto body and fender guy at Jake's Garage.
