It would be interesting to see an income graph for existing MB homeowners (much like they request in the post section of RBD's link).

From there, it would be even more interesting to superimpose the same income graph for MB homeowners that bought in the last 3-5 years. I'm totally guessing, but I would think the 'recent buyer population' median would be 2-3x the citywide of $120K.

I think that would be useful info, as it would shed some light on what type of price/income ratios we actually have in this city - cause it ain't the 11-13 some of you suggest.

Mookie, you're absolutely right. All my posts above were lies. You caught me. I bought the house as the part of a get rich scheme. The house sucks, the location is worse, I hate the schools around here, and my family is miserable. But I really think in 30 years it'll be worth more than it is today - so I bought it.

You know nothing about me, my family, or what drove my decision. So making a bunch of assumptions about what I do and don't expect out of my purchase is just pure insecurity talking.

Like it or not, the people that are buying here are changing. They aren't paranoid stock brokers from Rye, NY. They are people with real means that want a true ownership stake in our community.

Bottom line, just because your financial situation doesn't allow you to see it this way, doesn't mean you should condemn the rest of us. After all, making excuses is easy (don't need to tell you this); actually doing something is hard.

p.s. To your point, I do buy cars, microwaves, area rugs, and other depreciating assets. I buy them for consumption.

Agreed Otto. I also pulled the trigger this summer and couldn't be happier. I'm too in the camp that believes that my home could depreciate in the near-term, but I really don't care. I put a lot down, locked in a great interest rate, and paid a fair price for my place. Since I bought for consumption and not investment, I feel great about the purchase and even better about enjoying it for years to come.
