Yeah, the tab key in the Backpack kit should definitely be r2 1.25u instead of r2 1.5u. I hope that gets corrected before the GB, otherwise the kit won't be usable...

I don't know if that's an entirely reasonable expectation—for one, I'm pretty sure Harvard does not allow concealed or open carry on campus—but I can at least understand your train of thought there.

The rules that say "when they won't" most likely exist in the form of a code of conduct. I imagine almost every school-sponsored/affiliated organization has one. I would have no way of knowing what's written in Harvard's, but it wouldn't be particularly surprising to me if referring to your distaff counterparts in sexual and derogatory ways was considered unsportsmanlike.

The team is welcome to compete in whatever tournaments will accept them. They are not barred from playing soccer. What they can not do is represent Harvard...for the remainder of one season.

To put it another way: If a group of co-workers and I wrote a sexually-explicit and derogatory email about a different group of co-workers, and that email made it's way to HR—and then into the national news—do you think the company I work for should have no right to penalize me in any way?

To clarify about the arbitrariness of your line; if you ask ten different people what constitutes an action that directly stops someone else from exercising their own freedoms is, you will probably get twenty different answers. You and I are disagreeing about what freedoms Harvard has. Imprisoning anyone, ever, directly stops them from exercising a great number of the freedoms you and I take for granted. (Lotta felons out there who can't vote.)

...You're deteriorating into unfounded assumptions and maybe some ad-hominem here, so I'm gonna peace out. But thank you for pointing me at this J.S. Mill dude. I just took a quick skim over this essay he wrote called "The Subjection of Women" which seems pretty dang interesting. You should check it out.

Harvard is not a public space, nor even a public university. The players who created and circulated the literature in question chose to attend Harvard, as opposed to one of the many other institutions (collegiate and non) they could have played soccer for. To the best of my knowledge, there are no contracts saying Harvard is obligated to see their soccer team through a championship league, or even to have a soccer team at all.

Additionally, to the best of my knowledge, the players themselves don't seem to have been forbidden from doing anything. They're free to protest if they think these measures are unfair—they could transfer to another school, if they want. They could even lash out by creating and circulating another sexual report that's even ruder than the last.

I'm not sure where any of what's happened falls outside the line you've somewhat-arbitrarily drawn.

The same way you do. When you're the privileged party on the scene your job is to be an ally—not some grandstanding knight, riding in on a white horse to rescue the poor, helpless oppressed. Give them a stage. Amplify their voices. But do not speak for someone unless they've asked. It's patronizing, and most definitely not an "imperceptible" injustice when you are the one being spoken over. Especially when you, as an ally, can't understand the full reality of the situation someone else is living. You may be getting it wrong.

Okay, this sounds good on the surface. But what is your definition of "mistreatment"? A Saudi Muslim woman's definition of "patriarchy" is not the same as a WASP-y American woman's definition of "patriarchy" because their cultures are different, their values are different, their history is different. I'm reminded of the recent kerfluffle in which Laci Green insisted that Islam was "the most sexist religion" and refused to hear any arguments to the contrary. Her second-hand anecdotal evidence and opinions were more important than the actual experiences of the feminist Muslims who disagreed and protested in her askbox and in reblogs. Since she is (somewhat) well-known, her voice was heard over whatever nuanced discussions Muslim communities have had about Islam, the Qur'an and feminism. Too many WASP-y American feminists speak up as if they are "saving" Muslim women from what they think is "mistreatment"—without bothering to listen to those women about what their real problems and concerns are. That's what this is about.

As a woman, I don't see that. What I do see are lawmakers refusing to pass fair pay acts and curtailing access to health care. Businesses firing those who become pregnant or refusing to hire women with children at all. Women (hell, this one ain't gender-specific) still shamed and blamed for being raped. I make less than my fiancé despite working at the same place, doing the same job—and to his credit, this unnerves our boss, but his hands are somewhat tied as he is several bosses down from the top. Either the extremists are running the world, or this shit is pretty mainstream.

Either way, the world at large is not as nice or progressive a place as you seem to think it is. Go on and tell your jokes to the friends who know it's an absurd notion. Have a good laugh. Hell, I'd be lying if I said I didn't do the same, because laughter is how I cope with bullshit.

Just remember that there are a lot of men, many in positions of great power, who would laugh for a completely different reason. Maybe look up why Chris Rock stopped doing his "black people versus niggas" routine.

My premiums will go up by about 11% this year. IIRC, last year they went up by 12%.

Let me be clear: I don't believe that has anything to do with ACA. I suspect it has much more to do with things like...the $2.8 mil golden parachute a retiring CEO is awarding himself.

I've never actually seen my premiums go down, so I'm pretty shocked to see all these other people saying otherwise. Based on my experience, I'd assumed all private insurance companies were thoroughly incompetent and greedy as fuck. But maybe not all of them intend on using the extra funds from new customers and savings from increased preventative care to line their own pockets. Maybe there's hope even without single-payer or a public option.

...Here's hoping that cost controls and a hard look at executive compensation will be next.

Yeah, it really sucks that some people on the internet might actually wish ill upon white people. That's terrible.

Meanwhile, Ron Paul is giving speeches called "The South Was Right" and wants to repeal the Civil Rights Act. Rick Santorum singles out black people for being on welfare in Iowa when 90% of Iowan welfare recipients are white*. Newt Gingrich calls Spanish "the language of living in a ghetto". Black men are nearly twelve times as likely to be imprisoned for drug convictions as white men. Makode Aj Linde creates a installation about female genital mutilation—and though he's a vapid shithead for invoking a grossly racist caricature—the really heinous part is the white people grinning and giggling as the Minister of Culture mutilates the effigy of a screaming black woman. Republicans balk at including Native or immigrant women in VAWA and gut the budgets of poor, urban, mostly-minority communities. It goes on and on.

What's interesting about your claim is that "most white people" don't seem to speak up behind the closed doors these incidents happen behind. Go watch the video of the Venus Hottentot cake cutting or the Santorum incident for yourself.

Until it reaches the right eyes or ears there is little fuss, and that's the frustrating and sometimes terrifying part for anyone who isn't white. Because it means that not only are there influential white people in positions of power who are hostile to PoC, but that a significant portion of white people quietly accept their attitudes and actions.

Strangely, I don't see any comments from you expressing outrage at any of what I mentioned earlier. STFUC has posted about most, if not all of it. Yet a quote from an anonymous young woman upsets you enough to leave not one, but three comments.

I hope you'll read what I've said and do some hard thinking.

* (I lean left, so I don't think there's anything wrong with being on welfare. But the Republican view is that welfare recipients are lazy idiots...which apparently, is closely associated with black people in his mind.)

While Namiki/Pilot has been mentioned, I think it'd be better to compare/contrast what Waterman did here with what Pelikan did in 2010. Obviously Pelikan decided they wanted a slice of the "upmarket" pie too...but they created a separate set of colors to go with the slicker packaging and fancy names. If Waterman had done the same—even on a limited-production basis—would we be seeing such a negative reaction, or would people be drooling and pre-ordering full sets like they did with Edelstein? Hmm...

Ultimately, I don't think this move is going to have much effect one way or the other. Waterman fans may protest, but they're not going to stop buying if the ink's the same. I'm not going to start buying Waterman because their inks didn't interest me before, and there's been no substantive change.

...In contrast, at least one bottle of Edelstein is on my "to-buy" list, and before that line was introduced I didn't even realize Pelikan made bottled ink. Just my two bits.

Hey, I am totally up for discussion on anything. If I wasn't, I wouldn't have installed a comments section. And oh man you should totally fill out this thing yourself too. I copied mine mostly from here; I just filled in the missing day 18 with "Favorite Princess".

Anyway, what bothered me was that Fionna has a crush on PG, just like Finn has a crush on PB—but because she's a girl, we have to waste most of an episode on hypersentimental grade-school bullshit instead of just acknowledging her feelings and moving on, or handling the situation with more subtlety. (Like Cake and Monochromicorn, perhaps.) Especially since she's older.

Fionna was presented entirely as a reflection of her crush. We know she likes swords because Gumball gave her one and she was happy. We know she's a pretty rough gal because Ice Queen attacked Gumball and she had to save him. Almost all of her conversations with Cake are about Gumball. Even the title card has Gumball in it.

In contrast, we know Finn is a prankster who likes singing and rapping. We also know he's afraid of the ocean. None of those attributes were presented to us through Bubblegum. Maybe I'm not being fair since we only got one episode with Fionna, but it still nags at me.

It's not great when women are defined by their lack of romantic attachments either, as in those stereotypes you mention—but at least I can relate to independence, intelligence, confidence and aggressiveness. Those things will get you places!

Though I definitely agree that Ice King is an "observer" and Ice Queen was a great villainess. We didn't get enough of her! And I totally missed the homoerotic implications of Ice-Queen-as-Gumball pursuing Fionna. Hilarious.
