Saturday

actually, the building does NOT have historical significance. not every project an architect designs is significant. this utilitarian structure didn't meet most of the city's reqs for landmarking:

a. it's not associated with a historic event.
b. is is not associated in a significant way with the daniel huntington (unlike many of his other projects).
c. it is not associated in a significant way with any cultural, political or economic heritage of seattle.
d. it does not embody the distintive characteristics of an architectural style or period.
e. it definitely is not an outstanding work by huntington.
f. it may be identificable, but most people don't know about it and it has not contributed to the identity of fremont.

at best the argument can be made that the facade is different - especially in that it doesn't look like a something you would find in an area prone to lots of rain.

the only way the architects would have been able to fit a functioning fire station with adequate apparatus bay while keeping the blighted hungtington abortion, would have been to create a significantly taller and bulkier fire station. this would have had a negative affect on adjacent views and property values.

the board was smart to not vote for significance, not lazy. now the neighborhood can actually have a functioning station which may, in time, actually be worth preserving.

Sat, 16 Jan 2010 19:26:27 history of supporting light industrial, but so what? it also had a history of a functioning streetcar and bikers - both long gone. by your standards, the neighborhood already changed 'fundamentally'.

is the increased number of cheap bars having a positive impact on the neighborhood? not in our eyes.

will the last industries be saved by the proposed zoning? not likely.

you won't see industry swooping in to rehab fremont studios. outside of asko, there really isn't much 'industry' in the area of proposed rezoning - and we won't see any new industrial with the change. just more banal office parks, which will definitely drive up commercial rates.

half the built lots are already used as residences. smart planning could turn this into the 'vauban' of seattle. instead, we're likely to get the same old blight that burke, et al, have been building around the fremont bridge (which, btw, increased rates and become a beacon of bleak national chains)

the majority of vacant and near-dilapidated lots in the zone are all owned by one company, fremont dock co. do you think ms. burke really wants rents in the area to remain low? i promise you, she doesn't.

seattle used to be a place of visionaries. sadly, the NIMBYism and backwards-looking inhabitants that permeate fremont won't be able to stop the shift. it would be better to be proactive and develop a smart, green and well-planned solution instead of the assorted abortion of boxes it's bound to become.

Re: State of the hood (without merit). this one is especially awful, with a discombobulated palette, barely functioning windows, faux decorations all over the place , terrible massing, ridiculous rooflines, an awkwardly detailed wooden awning, and terrible art. this abortion has like 8 different materials on the facade. that's just the public face, the backside is even worse.

yeah, i realize there are houses in disrepair on 39th. they haven't been touched in ages. this building is less than 3 years old. wtf was the architect thinking? it's ridiculous. it's laughable.

buildings a blight on the neighborhood. i won't even go into the lack of merit or thought into the project. but it's really funny watching all the visitors try to figure out why there are testes hanging from
