I love this from Alan Watts:
"If we thought of life by analogy with a journey, with a pilgrimage, which had a serious purpose at that end, and the thing was to get to that thing at that end. Success, or whatever it is, or maybe heaven after you’re dead.

But we missed the point the whole way along.

It was a musical thing, and you were supposed to sing or to dance while the music was being played."

Dance on...

Re: On Blogging - Only Dead Fish

Those were the days Neil 'sighs'... keep up the great work in 2017.

Best

Mark

Re: Wave goodbye to the linear buying process

Nice one - totally agree - the funnel never really existed - its merely a marketing construct. Creating a Model for Social TV, Part 1

I would say you nailed it there Tim. All I would say is that it is still early days so mapping a second screen experience onto existing formats will feel clunky other than those which are 'live' event based formats as you say.

I suspect that there will be fully interactive formats coming (It's what Project Canvas was attempting to understand and provide for) although mostly these won't allow for the alteration of a linear narrative. And they might be a bit gimmicky and unsatifying after the initial thrill. Bit like sitting through a bad B-movie just because it's in 3D.

One thing that I do think is important is tension. The thing that creates drama - or more immersion is the resolution of tension. Its the typical cliffhanger that keeps us coming back. I am not entirely sure that an audience would really want that much control to change the outcome of a plot - but then again...

Looking forward to part 2...

Re: "FORESIGHT" Direct marketing for Royal Mail Postal Service by Proximity London

Actually both versions were written by myself with Derrin's help with grammar where required. I suspect that SXSW has jumped the shark somewhat but it does provide a focal point for technology to talk about itself - rather than about the nature of the human condition - which is of more use to planners. I once met the 'traveling geeks': Mr. Rheingold and his chums from Silicon Valley when they were over a few years back. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing/hearing - it was absolute nonsense - not a single thing of value or interest - at least to me anyway - but the circus that followed them around was even more bizarre. They had the billing of The Grateful Dead but came across more like Mary Mungo & Midge - actually that's unfair - they would have been way more interesting.

And so for me - like you probably - I wish I had been there to drink beer, listen to bands and talk tech and feel like I was part of something that was important and happening without caring about the irony of what I was doing - but it is doubtful I shall ever be there as justifying it not only to myself but to someone who would have to pay for me to go might be a rather embarrassing experience.

nice one

M

Re: The Rapture

Yep - very weird indeed Charles. This is a fallacy. Our perceptions are that it is going faster in the same way that when we enter flow - absorption into task level that 'time' appears to fly past. Time - or the ability to measure our perceptions of it are our own construct - not a physical reality. Reality incidentally is our own perceptions of stimulus constantly experienced but outside of us it is impossible to measure - the instruments are ours alone. Sentience begets an imperative to understand that which is not controllable outside of our own experience therefore we understand it only through faulty measurement. Actually I believe 'time' has stood still yet our collective conciousness has misinterpreted this as velocity.

Thats my view anyway.

M

Re: Ontological Interpretations of Quantum Theory & Damn Fine Drugs

Dude - we are very similar in our tastes and eclectic source materials - reading and inspirations. As part of that it may also extend beyond purchase (as I suspect it always did) as long as it is useful and interesting enough. As far as redefining it to "creating experiences that produce longer lasting satisfaction" is there any point in doing so? If so what? Re-purchase perhaps - advocacy? That would inherently imply that the role of marketing is to fill the gaps left by a lack of product efficacy which is wasteful. Make good products, have great customer service and find as many ways as possible to be be useful and interesting - some of which will be resonant and relevant.

Re: Ciao Italia, we are social

Superb news - many congratulations on getting it up and running - very excited for you all.

best of luck and if you ever need anything - gives me a call - happy to help.

Good luck guys

M

Re: Ciao Italia, we are social

Fantastic news and knowing Stefano well all I can say is what a superb team you have there in Italy - can only go from strength to strength - brilliant!

Best

M

Re: Our new home: 37 Golden Square

Well done Robin and team - nice to see positive success stories - excellent stuff!

best

Mark

Re: How to become a strategic ‘pretty picture’ person

Beautifully thought through and precisely put. The Business That Fun Forgot?

Delightful observation and doesn't go far enough IMHO. The whole business is failing to deliver and stop clients feeling fear. Very soon no-one will like being in this industry. The bean-counters killed it because we had no-one to champion creativity and the real value it delivers. Shame on those guys with decent agencies for selling out and not re-investing in people and building the brand of creativity in the 90s and early noughties but taking the dollar instead. The financial structures of WPP and Omnicom kill creativity - simple as that and we are impoverished as an industry as a result.

Re: Garden of Tweetdom II?

It would be the highlight of the year!
