The Twiddle Wakka bit me just yesterday with this little snippet from action_controller.rb:

I couldn't figure out why I couldn't upgrade to rack 1.2. And now I know!

Neat trick: create a dummy gmail account just for old log files. then add a line "mail my_rails_logs@gmail.com". Now your logs will get automatically archived for free and will be indefinitely searchable! (assuming you're ok w/ google having access to your logs, of course)

At Mobile Commons, we really like andand (http://andand.rubyforge.org/).

It was developed to remove the verbosity of
supporter.politician.campaign if supporter && supporter.politician

The way it works is that if any object or method in your chain returns nil, the entire expression will return nil. So your above use-case would become supporter.andand.politician.andand.campaign. If supporter or politician were nil, the entire expression would be nil.

swallow_nil reminds me of 'rescue nil' in that it will silently traps typos, which is a big problem. For example, supporter.politician.campane will return nil and not throw an exception.
