even small brands copy each other, the rationalizations are rampant, and enforcement is costly...it is almost impossible to go after these people large or small and in the end they kill design, there is a range of designs that are more "fair" game then others, however the benefits of brand building and innovation are diminishing, and people ultimately will close their design doors, the world will be a poorer place because the internet and consumers have less and less information and choice, also most consumers chose cheap and dirty

I design and build expensive high quality jackets in Toronto. Its a good all round article, some important notes. Patterns go beyond arm holes...most importantly does the jacket shape enhance the wearers shape or look. Always check where seams overlap...bulky overlaps especially in the arm hole create giant leather knots that make a jacket look cheap and also make for uncomfortable wear. Stitches per inch and the size of the needle can create an ugly cheap look. When jackets are jammed out as quickly as possible the stitch sizes are uneven, often quite large (5 stitches per inch and lower) with a large needle that punctures the leather and leaves a perforated look. checking for even tight stitching with correct tension makes beautiful tailoring (7-10 stitches per inch). Ultimately most jackets expensive or cheap are badly made production jackets. Finally leather tanning is a very toxic process, chrome tanning vs veg tanning, first world vs third world leather tanning makes a huge difference. The best leathers are veg tanned, the most ethical leathers are produced in Japan, Europe and the USA and Canada...other jurisdictions are not subject to any labour or environmental restrictions and most likely dump toxic wastewate directly into their water sources without any purification and maintain poor work conditions and little to no safety. Even high end brands often use third world leathers and sewers. Beware of labelling. Most high end companies will strive to claim they make their products in europe or the usa... many are circumventing or using confusing regulations to label 3rd world products as made ethically in the first world. Keep in mind it costs approximately 40-65 usd to produce a leather jacket in the 3rd world (pakistan/china et al) and the cost to produce a leather jacket in the USA for example typically costs 300-1200 usd....so sometimes even when your paying 4k for that designer jacket the cost might be 60 dollars to produce it. Ask quesitons, check labels and be skeptical of brands unwilling to share details of their production process. I work very hard on my brand in toronto and I can tell you I face these issues every day as I am being compared to inferior and poorly made and designed jackets,

and keep in mind there has been no workers protection, people have been maimed and crippled try being a one armed sewer in Bang. some have lost their entire families...that one factory was producing 2 billion dollars of product a year (cost) meaning at a mutiple of 20x profit for clothing companies...compensation...pathetic blood money, the Westons should not have gotten involved in such affairs...and this is fact...not every company should have the right to open whereever they want...business should fit into the character and nature of the communities they come to...Kensington market is unique...it will not be swallowed up by greedy ...yes greedy developers trying to up property values and buy up the last bit of downtown realestate for ruination...here is a nice image of your lovely compensation..compensate that....

Another side note....I live in Kensington...I know almost everyone that lives here....they are not agitators that kind of language is disgusting from a credible journalist (not saying this guy is) ....there is a consensus here that this store is unwelcome...unfortunately there is no process to vote loblaws out...nor is there the will to preserve or develop communities in a sustainable way...the tone of the article is inflammatory...if you came down here and asked the thousands of people who live here how they feel there is a general consensus..if you asked the hundreds of thousands who visit here every year there is a consensus...because this is a last preserve of culture in a city that allowed all its arts spaces and yuppies that allowed Yorkville to turn into corporate zoos....there is no need to be here and the Loblaws group is way off base to believe so....unfortunately there are no tools to stop it in spite of the fact everyone knows its just plain wrong

I was bit by my neighbours shitzu last year...it leaped up and bit through my jeans just below my groin. Sharp little teeth on those rats...I am a dog owner, 6 2 and 230.....this was a foul hyper beast owned. Typically the breed is owned by people who have the dogs as accessories and dont go through classic training. That being said and my blood aside I am friends with the owner and told her that she was not to bring the dog around me again because next time we would have an organic euthanasia situation. Sadly the dog continued to bite people and was put down. Dogs are pets not people they need to be trained and managed and if they bit people they should be removed from the genetic pool in most cases because they weaken both the breeds and reputations of dogs as people friendly.

GEEEEZE reality is corporate marketing or what you advertisers do is try and recreate or the micro entrepreneurial spirit on a corporate scale. The reality is micro companies know who they are, what they are and what they are trying to say. They have personae, humour, wit, and commitment. Large companies only worry about profits but forget about the "soul" of their business model (yuck I hate to say it DNA) Viral videos work when someone catches some humour or soul a brief glimpse of something real...large companies hire marketers to capture their "humaness" whether it exists or not. More often than not it doesnt work because large business forget that what they do and who they are is far more important then what they are trying to bullshit out in the world. You just cant fake it, thats the sad truth. Marketing sadly has to move toward the truth and teach clients about their business' and what they should be doing the illusion, the magic show is almost gone!
