So it has passed down through the family.  A few weeks ago my older sister corrected me when I said it and said it was obstreperous; it doesn't sound nearly as good.  A friend has googled it and found that it is now supposed to be in the New Collins Dictionary; it was a word years ago and then went out but has now come back.
