Miller</dc:creator><pubDate>Thu, 17 Nov 2011 13:58:16 -0000</pubDate></item><item><title>Re: Deaths per TWH by energy source</title><link>http://nextbigfuture.com/2011/03/deaths-per-twh-by-energy-source.html#comment-366838348</link><description>&lt;p&gt;Where would the boaters in the more arid regions of the West have gone?  It's not like there's any reasonable alternatives to places like Lake Mead (to use one spectacular example), or Lake Mohave, or Lake Havasu.   (The largest natural lake in Arizona, Mormon Lake, is less than 10 feet deep and occasionally dies up.)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;And I think you're grossly underestimating the number of drowning fatalities.   From 2000 to 2010 there were 267 fatalities at Lake Mead alone, of which 87 were from drownings.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.hendersonpress.com/local-news/item/633-lake-mead-national-recreation-area-deaths-on-rise" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" title="http://www.hendersonpress.com/local-news/item/633-lake-mead-national-recreation-area-deaths-on-rise"&gt;http://www.hendersonpress.c...&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In fact, if we just count the drowning fatalities at hydroelectric lakes in the desert West, you're easily over a thousand over the past decade alone.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So, why is it reasonable to count fatalities that occur in the transportation of wind turbines, and not the many more numerous deaths that occur because people are on bodies of water that wouldn't exist except for hydroelectric power?&lt;/p&gt;</description><dc:creator xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">H.D.
