Three Things A Tourist Must Do Before Leaving Hawaii

Many visitors put too much pressure on themselves to check off everything on their list. Don't. Hawai'i has enough variety of terrific and meaningful activities that you can do without the "must do" list.

It's much better to enjoy the time with the people you're with and adopt one of our island mottos:

"If can, den can. If no can, den no can."

Re: For Discussion: Must Eat Food And Places To Eat In Hawaii

@christinelu - Yes, definitely malasadas from Leonard's Bakery!

Re: For Discussion: Must Eat Food And Places To Eat In Hawaii

Zippy's of course for island-style fast food (http://budurl.com/v3sl), JJ Dolan's is more of a pub, but they have one of the best pizzas in town (http://budurl.com/r5nk), Arancino's on Beachwalk for terrific reasonably priced Italian (http://budurl.com/b33q) and Side Street for the pork chops (http://budurl.com/8l2z).

Re: For Discussion! - Tips For Traveling To Hawaii

You're going to hear a lot of locals speak "pidgin" English (http://budurl.com/b79g). Pidgin is a creole language based on English heavily influenced by the many languages spoken on the old plantations of Hawai'i.

Don't try and mimic pidgin English. Even for long-time residents of Hawai'i who didn't grow up speaking the language, pidgin is difficult to master both grammatically and in pronunciation. Use your normal conversational English or your native language if it's known by the local person you're speaking with.

And Christine already touched on this: tipping. Tip as generous as you can commensurate with the service you receive. It's more than a matter of looking cheap - many of the local people servicing your needs (taxi, housekeeping, bell staff, waiters, etc.) depend on tips to make a living. It's common for people in Hawai'i to have more then one, even three jobs. The price of paradise is high.
