Lets get things straight right off the bat: copyright infringement is not equivalent to stealing. Yes, copying software without permission is illegal, but to liken it to shoplifting is stretching the definition quite a bit. When something is stolen, the rightful owner is deprived the use of the stolen item. But when someone's copyright is infringed, she still has use of it and in addition, an extra copy of it exists in the world.

Of course I understand that it is in the BSA's interest to make that particular comparison. Their members ( http://www.bsa.org/country/... ) are after all in the business of selling proprietary software. The usual argument one hears is that each illegal copy made is a lost sale. There is no real data to back this up however ( http://www.techdirt.com/art... ); there is no guarantee that had the "pirate" not pirated he would buy said piece of software and not opt for other free (either as in beer, or as in freedom, preferably both) options.

And there are many such options. If you need an OS you can always opt for the various Linux distros; they are not as scary as they once were, and distros like Ubuntu and Mint are arguably easier to use than Windows or OSX. Alternatives exist for every category like office productivity (LibreOffice), email (Thunderbird), image creation and editing (Inkscape, GIMP), but you will never hear the BSA talk about them because it is not in their interest to do so.

Perhaps the best way to lower the piracy rate is not to get people to buy proprietary software, but to educate them about the availability and viability of free alternatives?

Language may be factor but I doubt it's a big one. Look at the European countries, or Japan, or China. Mastery of English would undoubtedly help because there is a lot of material out there in English but it does nothing to fix our school culture which for the most part does not encourage curiosity, or independent enquiry (and in fact it may actually discourage these traits) which is more important for scientists to have.

The problem with all your stories (and I'm referring to the sudden flood of comments from supporters/adherents of Sahaja Yoga here) is that they're all just that, stories. Anecdotes.

It's not double-blinded. It's not controlled. Any effect that you claim to experience can probably be attributed to the placebo effect. Come back when you have a better story to tell.

Damned if I know. I was just stating what the doctrine is. My personal
objection to dogs is based on a reluctance to being in the same room
with a large carnivore :p

I believe the doctrine is that dogs are unclean. I don't think it is explicitly forbidden to touch them, just that you are supposed to clean up afterwards.

Dragon Age and Mass Effect seems to cross-promote each other quite closely e.g: the Blood Dragon Armor. Even in Dragon Age: Legends, if you link up with your EA account that has ME, you'll get some ME-based equipment. Pretty cool
