The Gill house was killed off by Moser & Drew, who were killed off by VSB, who is now threatened. And after 50 years, Moser became a preservationist late in life, because he saw his work threatened. I say put the Gill house back and move the bulk of the museum elsewhere.

They also got rid of Miss Scripps’ backyard, which functioned as a public park in her lifetime. The museum already has a huge presence Downtown, they could singlehandedly revitalize (or vitalize, in some cases) any of several different local neighborhoods, if they could only get La Jolla out of their skin.

It's because it was poorly bid in the first place, by a project manager who had never done a civic project before, and who was brought onto the team due to working on the donor's house and his social connections. SOHO and others warned at the time that the quote was too low. It almost certainly still is. It's a very corrupt project.

Trump has a very short attention span, probably undiagnosed ADD. Once he feels he is a loser in that department, he will lose interest. And he obviously won't be getting his speeches covered uninterrupted for 30 minutes at a time on CNN.

It's free entertainment for retired people that are too cheap to pay $150 for a concert ticket. If crowds mattered then Bernie would be the Democratic nominee. And George McGovern would have trounced Nixon, instead of just winning one state.

Regarding Measure "I".
I never expected CityBeat to be less Progressive than the UT. If winning the support of all but one on the City Council made something right, then the Jacobs plan for the Park would be right too. Voting for this measure is like signing a blank contract that will be filled in later. The District is banking land in University Heights/Hillcrest (Ed Center property) that should be parkland and that they will sell to developers for tall apartments as soon as this passes. The measure does not kick the school out of the park, but not passing it makes them come to the table with a serious trade. And where is the study that says there is no land Downtown or nearby for a new school? If there is room for a stadium, there is room for a school. There could be a brand shiny new school, closer to the Barrio neighborhoods, and/or we could get new parkland and a library building either in Balboa or in Hillcrest, where it is needed more. Please change your mind on this.

So, they could have built 100 of these $10,000 crosswalks for the price of the $1 million study to figure out how the Jacobs Balboa Park plan's price had changed in five years? Remembering that this is an unfunded project that might never be built before another five years passes, if at all. The gall of people to claim it is a "safety" issue, when there apparently has never been an auto injury in this area of the park in the last 50 or more years. Are you really trying to tell me there has never been an injury at the 100 worst crossings in the city during that time? We can take that rationale off the table, along with every other bogus "reason" for the Jacobs plan.

They can't even get enough donations for the $3 million Botanical Garden Building restoration, despite 3-4 years of fundraising. And now they think that they can get 20 times as much for this destructive project, especially without Mr Jacobs' contributions? Not going to happen.

Parking problems can be solved by making park employees stop hogging the best spots, all day long, and adding more shuttles and shuttle stops. The whole thing seems to be a useless make-work project for friend of insiders.

Of course it had "architecture". Dozens of Victorian cottages, interesting industrial buildings like "Helix Wholsale" that became The Crack Shack, lots of 1920s buildings like the Reader offices, all those marine supply buildings that became restaurants, even the Spanish Revival laundry that became the Mexican restaurant. What you mean is that it had no interesting post-1950 buildings, which is somewhat, but not completely true. Also, Little Italy has/had the look of having been developed in many styles over 130 or so years. Convoy, almost exclusively, looks like it could have been designed by the same hack architect/builder over the course of a couple of months in the 1970s.

There are so many features that places like the Gaslamp, Little Italy, and East Village have that make this an idea that will never happen. Yes, they have the food part down, and as an "American" I eat there fairly often. But an area like those above NEVER happens without the design offices, antique stores, artists, unique (non chain) stores, gay presence and, most of all, vintage and quirky architecture. You can examine any area in any US city of the type they think they want to be, and they will have ALL these elements.
