It's very impressive. I mostly jogged around at the bottom, around the lake. But the story of leo Frank really weighed heavily on my psyche and turned me off.
Also, that place is in the middle of nowhere.
Did you visit Decatur? It is charming and very surprisingly hipstery
I was pleased that the conference has since been relocated to downtown Atlanta.

Re: Reinventing myself, little bets, and being ok with a 6.5

Heheh, well as the official 'talent grower', I approve this message! :)

Re: Reinventing myself, little bets, and being ok with a 6.5

Very wise approach. I think I use 'listening to understand' synonymously with your 'listening to learn' so I appreciate seeing the distinction. In fact - you might like the interesting twist on this that Alan Alda offered - I recently blogged about it and other communication principles so you can check out the link to Alda's ideas here: http://www.talentgrow.com/b... (under #3). I like your rules - they are good and valid. So many of these are broken, so often. People often spend much of their day caged in meetings to which they have no idea why they came, for which they have little to contribute, and which they resent as taking them away from productivity. So even if we just begin by strongly implementing your first rule of engagement and only invite those who NEED to be there, and have those present UNDERSTAND why they're there, we'd be light-years ahead of the status quo.

Another couple of rules I use when facilitating groups are the 'one speaker at a time' rule and the 'listen to understand' (not 'listen for your turn' or 'listen to disagree') rule. They help engage everyone fairly and give all voices, even the unpopular, a better shot at being heard.

Great article!

Re: Harvard Business Review Case Studies, Articles, Books, Pamphlets - Harvard Business Review

Nonsense. Every decade of human existence has been better than the one before it. Because those who created breakthroughs DID share what they learned with others. In technology, industry, health, education, and every other area of human life, the drive to achieve, learn, improve and develop has fueled improvements for humanity as a whole. By forcing controls and regulating HOW and WHEN those with the drive to succeed share their insights with others, you will squash their drive and destroy their will to overcome obstacles through hard work and perseverance. Of course you'll find psychopathic outliers, but overall, humans strive to improve their own lives AND the world as a whole. You just need to get out of their way.

Re: The Unexpected Antidote to Procrastination

I love this. Great advice. I once learned a sentence that captures a similar notion, which I've reflected on since: "Maximize, don't compromise." In other words, don't play with the goal of 'avoid losing'. Play to win, and whatever happens happens.

Re: Joshua Lipana Fought Until He Could Fight No More

What a devastating blow.
