Implementing the CCSS is going to be important work too. I hope he does equally well in his new position.

Re: The Berlin Wall? The Lech Walensa's that all of those countries had. The people's reaction to the disaster communism had created as the financial system buckled and the walls literally came tumbling down upon them.

Peace Prize - no - Reagan just made nice speeches.

Re: The Berlin Wall? For the second time as an adult. It was an amazing experience. But, the big surprise everyone was hit with (except the tourists chiseling at the wall) is how severely it impacted the West German economy. East Germany's entire infrastructure was in ruin - nothing worked - and they poured over the border, flooding the autobahn with little Russian cars that didn't make the entire trip. And the attitude of the West Germans didn't help - they were not pleased by the East German sense of entitlement (hello communism). Financially, it was a disaster for the West.

One of my colleagues just published a book based on his experience as a journalist over there during that time: www.RoamingGhostland.com It's a good read and extremely informative.

Re: Masticate Or Flush: That Is The Question

I kind of always like when you get a new place just to hear about the people in the building. As always, this was entertaining.

Re: 51 Is Such A Lopsided Number

I thought you guys would like to know ya' done made somebody feel good by
commenting:

"Someone said to me several years ago, during peach season, "Marlena, you
are a peach!" and it made me feel so good. I don't even remember what i did
to deserve such a nice thing said, but I know what you did: you interviewed
me, and did such a lovely job of it, and put it up in the blogsphere, right
there scrolled down from the most big and lusty sandwich imaginable (i
almost got lost in it, forgetting that i was on a mission).

anyhow, this is just to say, thank you, thank you very much. and the
comments are so sweet, and so touching, and have really lifted my spirits so
much! i'm in new york at jfk waiting for my flight to chicago, decided to
check my email, and now feel like a million bucks. so sweet.

and yes, i do believe that fred's last name is spelled exactly like that:

luzzi! he used to raise bees, and put up jars of honey, labeled: honey by
fred. my husband still calls him: honey by fred, even though the bees are
long gone.

fred is such a lovely guy. such a lovely guy. and it makes me happy indeed
to think that summer--and tomato season--are coming up!

tomatoes! peaches! blogs, and very nice people! its all just so darned
good!"

 _____

Re: 51 Is Such A Lopsided Number

Thanks to everyone for helping Mellie out - she is really appreciative!

 _____

Re: 51 Is Such A Lopsided Number

Hi -

My pal, who runs the Sacramento Food Forums interviewed food critic Marlena
Spieler, author of like a gazillion cooking books a few weeks ago. It took
Mellie like a year to get Marlena to agree to the interview and Marlena
stopped by her blog the other day and no one had commented. She's had a
bunch of readers, but no comments until tonight. Mel is trying to forge an
alliance with several of the foodie bloggers, authors, and columnists and it
would be of GREAT HELP if you could just stop on over and leave a comment on
this post.

Ever grateful - Lori

http://cookingschmooking.bl...
.html

Re: Pant Splitting and Bed Wetting

Hysterical. I know that character. She's pissed at Maury the butcher down
the block too because he shorted her on some kiolbasa last week and hasn't
missed any opportunity to spread the gossip that he's slippin' the old
sausage to Myra right before close every night.

Pretty good.

Re: Pant Splitting and Bed Wetting

Now, I loved that video and I too, hadn't heard you. I'm searching the databanks trying to recall who you remind me of - besides yourself of course. I'll get back to you. Great story--nothing like reliable polyester.

Re: Only In Paris: Sidewalk Toilet

Well, I was thinking, man, this sounds so much like Berkeley with the junk on the sidewalk to pick through until you got to the toilet. That is uniquely Paris.

Re: How I Lost My Virginity

Well, I think you have joined the multiple legions of girls everywhere who lost their virginity and have absolutely nothing to say about it as a formative experience in their life. It's kind of like drinking liquor - the first time is so, so bad or just plain meh, that we wonder why we ever picked up another drink, but we did. I had a Wanna-Wanda to cheer me along (it's in the post where you gave me the great ideas for writing - still blocked, but mulling them). Of course, I never had the great breakthrough on the guy thing. I still can't figure out what you all find so intriguing about their penae wielding (I am sure that's the plural too, so keep using it - I've alerted Websters).

Re: 51 Is Such A Lopsided Number

I just wanted to make sure you got it! 51 is not so lopsided, it's still
the furthest you can be away from 60 and be in the 50s.

You do not have to mention me. I'm sorry I wasn't more creative after
seeing all the other stuff!!

Blog virtual gift envy. At 8, we shut off the lights (it was still sort of light out) and took the dogs for a walk in the park. Then, we lit candles and sat on the patio - talking (imagine). The kids wanted me to tell my girlfriend stories of their childhood. We connected in a way that I did not expect. We're going to do it every month - and maybe more often and for longer. The time slips away so quickly--they'll be gone before I know it.
