I don't have a good answer, and I think it's a *very* interesting question.

Re: http://gwynmorfey.com/notes/player-thirteen

I'm not sure that was stepping outside safe boundaries, though, because the game design intended and required it. And it _was_ a well designed game!

But I think you're right - the key is which character you're playing. I like to pick up elements of Dwayne Hicks (reluctant leadership) or Martin Riggs (bitter determination), because they're fun to play and make good stories. If the game specifically endowed me with another character that's a long way from my own, especially if there are costumes, new names, or other reminders involved, then I'd be more comfortable playing a "bad guy" role.

I think this is why Outbreak works. As a zombie, you attack your friends, but you don't have any choice about it (infection is mandatory), and there's nothing of "you" left - you're clearly something else.

Re: http://gwynmorfey.com/notes/it-s-all-german-to-me

It's true that this is only one aspect. It might be interesting to repeat the experiment with the screen set to monochrome, or turned off. I found this particularly informative, though, because "can't understand any text" is an aspect I hadn't really thought of before, and it's probably the most common.

Re: Check if gravatar exists for email in Ruby

Thanks for this! About 7% of the members of a community site I run have gravatars - which is disappointing, but it's nice to know.

Re: http://localhost:3000/notes/33

This is a test!

Re: http://fire-hazard.net/exchange

Just a reminder that we've got one extra Heist session that's in aid of Mind. The problem is that, even assuming you can maintain a solid roster of highly skilled quick responders, they'll still need to be up to speed with the application specifics. Keeping one person up to date wouldn't be that hard (perhaps they'd code-review with the main developers for a day a month?), but you'd need to keep quite a few ready to be sure of 24x7 coverage.

Re: http://fire-hazard.net/exchange

Heads up guys: You probably want to click "subscribe by email" below (next to "Sort by [newest first]") so you'll get notified of new posts here. I've pulled things out of my Someday file that'd been there more than a week. Doing something _right_ makes you right - doing something wrong just to do something is sometimes useful but no good as a general rule. And number 12? That seems to undermine the whole thing. Ideas are cheap.

Re: The Cult of Done

#s 1, 4, 6 and 8 are useful (but not new)
#s 2, 3, 7 and 13 are meaningless without further explanation
#s 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are dangerously wrong

Re: http://www.fire-hazard.net/forum/heist_16_388

Hey guys, here's where you start planning!
