Sanjay, Interesting post! Your Begadas have always been special.... And I am sure this would have been something special! What were the other compositions that you sung yesterday? Was it a complete SwatiThirunal special?

Unfortunately, I had to back my plans off the Kutharaimaaligai concert... :( again thanks to the stressed out work at office...
I have heard the '64 Academy GNB concert a no of times... its a classic!

Sanjay, Interesting indeed! Charsur have always been coming up with interesting concepts time and again, and they have been awesome! They have indeed created a brand value by their unique packaging and sense of aesthetics. I have specially enjoyed the Kutcheri series, Paddathi, Kshetra! I hope you guys collaborate more on RTPs and bring out some of your memorable pallavis from your awesome repetoire of RTPs, probably a special album on viruthams and yes, something in the lines of your signature tune, I am definite it would be pathbreaking.
ECM records of germany had also collaborated with L.Shankar and team (Zakir,Vikku,UKS etc) for such Ragam Thanam Pallavi series in late 70s and early 80s, I do have the series with me. They had released some popular albums like Panca Nadai Pallavi (Shankarabharanam, Keeravani), Who is to know, Raga Abheri, Soul Searcher etc. I have also heard of the Vinyl preservation project with the famous one by KVN.

I also quite liked the signature tune of the Sanjay Subrahmanyan show! For a moment I thought, how brilliant it would be to hear a full fledged album with raagam alapanas overlaped and interlaced with interesting swaram patterns!

Sanjay, How long did you learn violin and do you still play the instrument?
And when did that big self realization moment of wanting to perform big time carnatic classical happened? Was it a nervous start? I bet it wouldn't have! I guess a post on your "first concert experience? should be on the reckoning!
And importantly, what happened to your cricketing ambitions...? Lots of cricketers turned carnatic musicians around... huh!!? (I knew the fact that Unni used to be a neat cricketer in the 2nd division league). I have indeed read your occasional cricketing posts on the i3j3 site, so def'ly know your enthu levels in the sport!

Sanjay, Let me guess your seasonal favourites. Specially the ones you sing in the later half of your concerts... Thillanas - Darbari kanada, Khamas, Sindubhairavi this season (in a chronological order last few years). And compositions like Malasai (Jonpuri), Ramanai Bhajithal and this season Engum niraindhu...! Also adore your less frequent compositions like the anandabhairavi thillana, kaya roganesham..(abheri)!

Also Sanjay, earlier i felt your favourites used to be Kamboji, Chakravakam... Now its like more of Mohanam,Thodi or Shankarabharanam! Love the way you build the cresendos during Alapanas of all these ragams... esplly Thodi!

Sanjay, Very interesting insights! I too was struggling with Harikanboji for a long long time... thanks to your elaborate versions of "endhukku nirdhaya" that I heard in Feb/March... have managed to get a hang of the aesthetics of the raagam! Very much enjoyed the elaborate version which you had sung as main in Mylapore Anjaneyar temple.
The whole post induces oodles of nostalgia.... made me switch on to my thatha's times (a huge TNR buff)!

Sanjay, Guess you sang the same pallavi in Kannada last year or in 2005-2006... suprisingly, still not able to recollect where it was?!
Between do you recollect the Saveri pallavi phrases that you sang in Velachery Ashram in Feb? If I can guess it right... you had said it was composed by KVN rite?! Not definitely sure.... But I loved your concert that day with Kedaragowlai being the main piece!

Currently hearing your Varali RTP with pallavi "Ambike jagadambike varaalidho", Loved the ragamallika part too in Sahana,Komalangi,Janaranjani and Behag. Do you plan for these ragams or is it spontaneously sung on stage depending on your mood?

Have always relished your RTPs live!! Have to mention my fav's in last 6-8 months - Specially: Priyadarshini in PS high school, Nasikabhushani in PSBB, Bageshri - Kalarasana, Komalangi/GowriManohari - KGS, Gowlai - Mudhra, Suddha Danyasi - BGS, Saveri - Ashram, Patdheep - Hamsadhwani. Ones that I badly missed where the Bangalore/Hyd ones: Jonpuri, Hamsanandi and Bageshri again! Loved your Kharaharapriya main in Mudhra, Thodi main in Samajam and Suruti main in Hamsadhwani.
Favorite one at home is the brilliant Shanmugapriya piece on the Araar Asaipadaar DVD!

Has been quite an experience for me! Thanks a million!

The Pallavi that Sanjay had sung in Kalarasana in Bageshri was "Thaandavam aadum thillai natarajam... tha jham thaka jham thakita jham". Had the privilege of attending the awesome concert all alone. If I rightly remember... the line up had Vaagadheeshwari, Vasanta, Bhairavi and Purvikalyani! Then the Lovely Bageshri RTP!
