How can we have a country founded on Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness without Medicare for all?

www.1payer.org has free faxes to send to appropriate congress people to support single payer and also phone to call Obama and reps. Since HR 676 will be debated on the house floor and voted on, this is the time to rally support. That same site, Health Justice, also has a program to call people who want to support single payer and support them in taking action.

PDA and Healthcare Now and Physicians for a National Healthcare Program all have good action steps.

Yes--it's a great strategy. I think that was an ingenious move on Weiner's part to do that with the energy and commerce committee.

He doesn't want to eliminate Medicare....it was a strategy to get people like the blue dogs who kept talking about not favoring a government run insurance program to put their votes where their mouths are. Nobody voted against it because medicare works really well for their constituents and there would be havoc if they voted against this "government run health program.

The next day he introduced an amendment to replace the terrible HR 3200 bill with HR 676 for expanded medicare for all. Since nobody voted against medicare--how can they justify not voting for everyone to have it when it is cost neutral, covers everyone and saves the trillion dollars cost of the other bills?

It was table from the committee to instead be discussed and voted on with the full house when congress reconvenes in fall. This is the time to call your rep and ask them to support expanded, enhanced medicare for all.

As a researcher I have taken a good look and it is not FREE, it's paid for through taxes was a single medicare for all plan could be. That would not be in financial trouble because with the money we are already spending we could cover everyone with medical, dental, vision, chiropractic, homecare and LONG term care. All that and the financing of it are in HR 676 bill. Get the information instead of spewing talking points. The money would be going directly into healthcare instead of no-value-added-middleman insurance companies and their wasteful overhead, obscene profits and millions a day for lobbying. There will be more primary care doctors, and a stimulus to the economy (see CA nurses Association research ) and 2.6 million new jobs.

The information is out there for people really interested in the facts. I do not find this discussion productive because you through out information that is not true as if that proves something.

Yes healthy criticism is important to keep improving--it's like medicare here. It's good to know that there are countries where health and human life are treated as a right and not a commodity for profits.

It's ironic that a country such as the US that was founded on precepts such as those in the declaration of independence of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," has (a lack of) healthcare that doesn't preserve or respect human life ( @20,000 Americans die each year for lack of healthcare) over outrageous profits. (Some execs make @ $250,000 a day). Those who lack care are not just the uninsured but those who can't afford deductibles and co-pays or the drugs they need after paying outrageous premiums and so don't get care in time. That's a kind of inhumane rationing that is not base on priority of need but of greed.

Recent research showed that people on medicare were much more satisfied than those with private insurance--understandably since 60%+ people go bankrupt due to medical situations and 75% of those HAD insurance.

Yes, I have friends from living in England who feel the same way and Canadians friends who don't appreciate people misrepresenting the system either. A recent survey indicated that upwards of 85 % of Canadian's like and support their healthcare system.

Except that people in the United Kingdom and Canada are rebelling because of the lies being spread about their health systems that they love. There has been in-depth reviews of the healthcare systems. See "Sick Around the World' on PBS. See the decades of work and research done by Physicians for a National Health Program. There is not a lack of good information---just people shouting lies and myths and talking rather than getting that information and the research and analysis that has been done.
