Hi Ish,
I don't have any recipes with me in SF, but I posted a recipe for red velvet cupcakes and banana bread a while ago. Those are from scratch so they might be a little ambitious if you're a complete kitchen noob. Maybe start with using a box mix but making your own icing? There is also this book called The Cake Mix Doctor where the author takes regular cake mix but throws in different ingredients to make special types of cake. I'm not sure if this helps, but let me know if you have any other questions!

yes, i think they practice MICROroasting, which is like especially attentive
roasting. did i tell you about their kyoto iced coffee? it takes 20 hours
to brew from this crazy contraption. next time you're in town i should be
your food tour guide!

Unfortunately, I don't have time or energy for leisure reading. I can
barely get through my assignments! The drawer contains a bunch of things
that don't have anywhere else to go, like blank CDs, my passport, and my
keys to my parents house in San Diego. My storage options in my studio are
limited! You make a good point about people's nightstands, though. Thanks

i think the burger would be better if i mixed in a little
worcestershire(sp?) sauce with the meat. or maybe a little soy sauce. i
wanted a little more umami flavor.

it was a mixed method study so there was a qualitative component and a
quantitative component.

i hypothesized that 1st generation Fil Ams would send more money more
frequently if they had more relatives in the philippines. and i also
analyzed whether 1st gen sent more money if they made more money. i found
that none of those things influence the amount or frequency of remitting.

as for 2nd gen, i hypothesized that females, those that have visited the PI
many times, and those with knowledge of tagalog/other philippine language
would be more likely to intend to send money in the future. this wasn't the
case either. nearly all 2nd generation fil ams said that they plan to remit
in the future, regardless of their sex, their knowledge of a philippine
language or whether or not they've visited the philippines.

then there was a qualitative section where i interviewed all participants
about how they felt tied to their culture and in what ways, their reasons
for remitting money and/or balikbayan boxes to their relatives, and other
related questions.

i didn't actually read it cover to cover or anything. i just looked up the
sections relevant to my thesis topic. my thesis was called "generational
differences in remittance practices of filipino americans" and i interviewed
first and second generation filipino americans on their ties to the
philippines and their remittance practices (or intention to remit, for
second generation.)

I ran into her two times, actually.
First I saw her outside the ferry building, then I saw her two weeks later
on market street near union square. Both are fun, touristy places so you
have a good chance of running into her. You should totally get $2 cotton
candy from the guy selling it off a huge stick/tower thing if you run into
him too. Get the green- it's apple flavor!

too bad i'm moving away! I would be down to give you a food tour if you ever made it to San Diego. If you happen to find yourself here during winter break or summer break, I'm your gal!

& not to be snobby about it, but I have never ever been satisfied with Mexican food in Los Angeles. They do weird things like include rice and beans in their burritos, while in SD you get allllllll meat. Plus, they don't do carne asada fries.
