I found my journal to be the most valuable learning tool I have.

I'm a touch biased :-), but it's worth taking a look at Tradervue (http://www.tradervue.com). It's a new (free) web app that launched a couple of weeks ago, designed specifically for helping traders keep their trading journal, and automating some of the busy work that goes into it. And once you have your data in there, you can see analysis of what's working and what isn't, and even share some of your trades with the community if you wish.

Re: Why My Next Airbnb Guest Will Burn Down My Building Leigh Drogen

Heh. Well, just make sure it doesn't burn down between August 1-14, which seems to be a bizarre hole where nothing is covered. From their blog:

"Starting August 15th, [...] personal property will be covered for loss or damage due to vandalism or theft caused by an Airbnb guest up to $50,000 with our Airbnb Guarantee. When you're playing for something that's significant to you (or the potential winnings are significant), it's a whole different game.

I don't have much more to add to the great comments here - other than to mention that IMHO paper trading is invaluable when learning to trade something like options, where it's not always obvious at first what your position value will be for various moves in price or volatility. Thinkorswim's platform is great for modeling this!

Re: Scripting News: Is Dropbox a privacy revolution?

I haven't used it myself, but perhaps pogoplug would work for you?

Re: Learning the Right Lessons from the Amazon Outage

Well put. :-)

Re: Learning the Right Lessons from the Amazon Outage

Good post. On your lesson #2 about Amazon not to be trusted...I agree with you. However, it certainly wouldn't hurt for them to be a little more transparent about how their availability zones within a region are constructed, how they relate to each other, and how they deal with a complete failure of one AZ...hopefully something positive will come out of the post-mortem they do.

Re: Market Primer, 12-19 Investing With Options

Video seems to be missing!

Edit: fixed. :)

Re: Market Wrap 5-11 Investing With Options

And I was just telling someone how you were good at remembering to post the links now... ;)

Re: Market Primer, 5-9 Investing With Options

Ok. But as I understand it, taking the expected volatility (in this case, the vix) and dividing by sqrt(# periods) should give you the stdev of expected price move for the period. And we know that price should remain within a +/- 1 stdev range about 68% of the time. So...I believe the expected daily range should actually be +/- $28, or 1082 to 1138, rather than the range your spreadsheet has of 1096-1125. Similarly true for the expected monthly move. So...the "2 times" thing you mentioned is throwing everything off, I think. No?

[edit: changed a '*' to a '/']

Re: Market Wrap, 4-29 Investing With Options

Hmm!
