In my opinion, they are the wave of the future. I haven't heard of UC's program, but I have heard of Carnegie Mellon's Cognitive Tutors for Math. See http://www.carnegielearning....

I've checked out the underlying architecture and am impressed at how these are built. I was thinking of doing one myself using their authoring tools. See
http://ctat.pact.cs.cmu.edu...

Please post us, if you do select one of these products for your children.

All the best,

Re: Cool Cat Teacher Blog: Soldier On

Hi Vicki,

Very cool. I hadn't been following the netgen project so I wasn't aware of
just how deep it goes. Congrats. It looks like a fantastic project.

I feel so bad that too many teachers are shut out by fear-based restrictive
policies. But in the spirit of "never give up," I'd like to offer some
more suggestions for possible workarounds. I'm not sure that I understand
the dimensions of the problem. So take these for what they are worth and
forgive me if I don't get it right.

 1. Did your teacher say she would set up separate gmail accounts for all
her students? She could also have her students email their documents to her
gmail account. She would get access to the documents in google docs but
would lose the collaboration feature if her district blocks it.
2. She could assign one or more students to compile the class comments in
class blogmeister or in Wetpaint or another wiki that isn't blocked. Then
the student could send the summaries up to the netgen sites at home.
3. Finally, MS Word has some clunky workgroup features that would allow
student teams to collaborate on common documents. Once again, in class
collaboration teams would have to have one student assigned to do a
complilation and send it to the netgen site overnight from a non-blocked
home.

I hope these ideas are somewhat helpful. If not, so be it, just ignore.

All the best,

Gregory Louie

"Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power,
and magic in it." - Goethe

Re: Cool Cat Teacher Blog: Soldier On

Hi Vicki,

Keep the faith. If Clayton Christensen is correct, traditional School Districts of all sorts, but especially the most controlling dinosaurs will become extinct in the next decade.

Disruptive innovations coupled with user-networks will allow venues for innovative teachers to offer educational value directly to students and their families.

As you know, the fastest growing schools are already virtual schools. Educators like yourself and the Next-Gen teacher will be prepared when the traditional system collapses under the weight of its own inertia. In the meantime, the networks we create build the foundation for the future.

Possible Ning workarounds for your Next-Gen teacher:

1. Wetpaint for creating a collaborative space
2. Class Blogmeister
2. Dimdim for connecting to other classrooms

P.S. For Christensen's video see: Disruptive Innovations and the Way We Learn Available at: http://www.forum-network.or...

BTW: I hope to see you at NCTIES at the awards luncheon.

Re: Cool Cat Teacher Blog: Announcing: Microsoft Surface

Hi Vicki,

Thanks for making us all aware of this upcoming technology. FYI: There are several do-it-yourself plans for producing a multi-touch desktops for under $100. See: http://www.instructables.co...

For multiple reasons, I prefer a vertical implementation described by Johnny Lee at Carnegie Mellon University. See: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~john...

Another slightly related tech I'm following is Edusim, which is an scalable application that allows teachers to easily create multiple educational 3-D virtual worlds for use on interactive whiteboards. I follow the blog at: http://roots.greenbush.us/
