The non-profit I work for has distributed over 100 of the filters in the link below to American Indian elders, disabled, etc, since the smoke emergencies have begun this season. These filters will clear over 700 sq. ft. and make it possible to shelter in place. If you are looking at air filters, don't buy the $69.95 Walmart special, it WONT WORK, this will:

Hmmm, I never said you could rent a decent place for $800 in Humboldt, or for that matter for $1,400 in SF. Neither of those things is true, or relevant. The MEDIAN rent is a statistical measure of the middle point in the rent spread for a marketplace. The point was to show the relative difference in the cost of living between the Bay Area and Humboldt Co. How we got from statistics showing differences in cost of living in a locale, to "I can't rent a decent place for the median rental amount" is something you will have to explain, because it is not what I said, and has no relevance to the discussion.

I stand by my original premise, the officer who gets a bigger paycheck in the bay area will probably have LESS discretionary income to spend after paying the higher cost of living in the Bay Area.

I appreciate our Sheriffs dept. There are a lot of good people working hard to protect us in a difficult situation. They really do put their lives on the line, just like firefighters, or emergency responders, or PG&E lineman, or a variety of other professions that work for our safety every day. Having said that, this argument does NOT hold water.

Given the differential cost of living, this person's move was a pay decrease. As only one example:

Eureka, CA Median gross rent in 2013: $821.

San Francisco Median gross rent in 2013: $1,491.

Oakland Median gross rent in 2013: $1,117.

etc.

The current statistics are much worse than the 2013 stats I was able to lazily google, and this differential is true across most expenses, not just rent.

Enjoy your effective pay decrease, higher density crime, worse education, and lack of natural resources.

I for one, recognize the value that I receive living in Humboldt County, and despite the fact that I know I too could get a 50% plus pay increase by moving to the open cess pool of the bay area, I have no intention of leaving.

BS, all the University Center programs, including Center Arts, Center Activities, the Aquatic Center, the Rec Center, Dining Services, The University Center, etc. are funded by STUDENT FEES and income made from the operations. According to Suddenlink, this outage is over 15,000 customers throughout Calif.

We are still out in Old Town Eureka, (3rd and F). The outage went all the way to Truckee, CA according the the Suddenlink Texas call center.

The other areas of the state are coming back online, but the Eureka center does not carry the spare parts (power supply?) to fix this and is having parts sent up from "somewhere else."

According to the Texas SuddenLink Call center, the parts are being driven up from Truckee, CA, however according to the Local Eureka office, they are not coming from Truckee, they are coming from somewhere else, but in either case it is anticipated that restoring service may still be hours off at best.

Hmmm, lets recast this. Hypothetically, lets assume a CEO stated "I don't believe in inter-racial marriage. I support the theory of racial purity, based on my biblical interpretations, a philosophy that does not allow blacks and whites to marry. I am as guilty of hell of this statement"

This leads to two questions:

1) Would Mayor Menino be within his rights to worry about this type of racial discriminatory speech in his city? In our little exercise here, should he take a position on this hypothetical statement?

2) Is there any substantive difference between that hypothetical statement and the one that Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy made?
