Thank you! I've been freelancing since I was 18, like you. I recommend doing internships if you have the time/money. Otherwise, if you really feel that you know a publication's style, find the editor's email and pitch your stories.

I'm not totally sure if it was food poisoning. All they could tell me in the hospital was that it was some sort of GI sickness--not terribly specific. I did not confront the restaurant staff. It's probably that restaurant and I'll never go back there, but it would be hard to prove that they were responsible.

If you're considering switching from a creative writing major to another liberal arts degree, I'm not sure that will make much of a difference (in terms of marketability). If you're choosing between liberal arts degrees, then I think you should just go with what you love (math or science actually might be a little more marketable than English or Comp. Literature).

An option is pursuing the C.W. degree and minoring in something like business or marketing. If money is really a pressing concern – and I feel you, because this economy sucks and college doesn't always seem like a secure investment – then the safest thing is majoring in something marketable and then doing creative writing as a minor. If you could see yourself as an engineer, you can make good money.

Whatever you do, try to get some summer internship or other job experience. You could even volunteer somewhere that seems interesting to you.

Although you could just as easily disregard the above cause I'm 23 and what do I know?
