Sweet panel -- I'm excited to hear more about data and personalization. Too often we think of big data as a mechanism to anonymize people and their preferences rather than to better serve the individual. Cool presenters in cool industries as well!

If you like Robert Earl Keen, you might consider trying Jerry Jeff Walker. He's a Texas troubadour singer-songwriter. His earlier stuff (when he was a drunk) is better. This is totally the music I grew up on . . .

I think that the reason Local Natives hasn't bowled you over is that you haven't seen them live. I think the album just doesn't capture their enthusiasm, musicality and intensity that their live show has (besides the fact that all of them play multiple instruments). I caught them first at SXSW and then twice in DC. I hope their second album does the band justice.

I think that without more information, you need to think about the possibility of an omitted variable bias. If you recall from stats class, this was illustrated by the priest/pollution problem. The data showed that a city with more priests had more pollution. The answer wasn't that the priests caused more pollution but that population -- positively correlated with population numbers -- was positvely correlated with pollution. What variables are being omitted with your back of the envelope analysis? Fitness of the team? Strength? Speed? Ball possession?
Walm is also correct that rugby is far better than soccer.

The Bear in Heaven/Freelance Whales show was fantastic when I saw it in DC three weeks ago. Its especially crazy when you jump from Freelance to Bear in Heaven, which has a completely different sound. Freelance was much more self-assured when I saw them solo on Friday. Should be a great show, especially if the SF venue has good sound engineers. Be sure to check out Local Natives (out of LA). Saw them for the first time at SXSW. Awesome.

Sadly no. I had tickets but he was concert 3 of 3 that week and I just saw him that summer at H and I Synagogue. He is terrific--just wish people would come to DC on a weekend!

I think Gladwell was focused more on the incompatiability of southern populism and the civil rights movement (but he did not effectively make his point). I took what I wanted out of it :) Note that the Steven Lubet that Gladwell cited is a NU Law professor though.

Call of the Wild is excellent but not my favorite. Little Women will always be my (non-science fiction) favorite--interesting to read that book in light of the transcendentalism and her father's friendship with Ralph Waldo Emerson.

I don't know much about media, but isn't the value added to sites like Gawker is that they boil down all the relevant media and give me the snippets I want to read? We are innodated daily with information, news and opinion and sometimes I appreciate just going to one spot to read it all. If I recall correctly, the Gawker post linked to the original WaPo article . . .

I am sure Ms. Kardashian is a lovely person as much as we can tell from a reality television show and I am by no means judging her life choices. Instead, I am judging the hypocrisy of the very conservative Sean Hannity holding her out as a role model for little girls. I am somewhat unclear why she is a role model when there are so many more positive role models out there. If you are unaware of who Sean Hannity is, you can check him out on Fox News.

Pardon my skepticism, but the same thing re: young age was said about Mugabe in Zimbabwe (as well as other African nations w/ despots). We should never underestimate the lengths that those in control will go to--case in point, the Iranian government shut down the mobile phone network, including texting, the cheapest and easiest method of communication for the Iranian middle class. It will be interesting to see what the Ayotallah will do with respect to the election fraud.
