If you don't know what choices are potentially available, how will you know if the amount of choice you think you should have is reasonable? For example, if I think there are only three colours in the world and I am offered a choice of three colours, I would think the choices provided to me matched what I think I should have. What if I found out later that there were a thousand other colours to choose from? Would my thoughts change? It's possible.

I know the context is different and the questions were fairly specific, but I just wonder if some (many?) people cannot imagine the choices that could be available (along with the pros and cons), until it is suggested to them.

Re: Online learning is not a bolt-on option

No doubt those who think of online learning as the "cheap option" are those who simply upload pdfs of otherwise hardcopy notes, study guides, and assessment questions, then expect students to read and submit assignments on time. That *is* cheap in every sense of the word! Online learning allows potential students to consider more courses from across the country, and even across the globe. IMHO, the only institutions to survive ultimately will be those who offer excellent content, quality resources, genuine levels of administrative and academic support, and encourage interactivity.

Re: What is a friend?

"at what point in time is it socially acceptable for me to request supportive behavior from a new found friend?" -- Supportive behavior can come in many forms. Emotional / moral support during a difficult time may be requested, offered or simply 'happen' in a way that feels very natural despite a lack of physical proximity.

It would be interesting to research this area of social media. Are there norms already in place or is the platform so new that we're still finding our way?

BTW, written well. ;)

Re: Getting close ... from a distance.

It looks like we have drawn the same conclusions from remarkably similar circumstances! The onus is on upon us to define clear boundaries from the outset, stick to them and be firm when students try to test the limits. Even for those who may be 'hurt' in the process, there is a valuable lesson for them to learn. After all, they will enter other professional relationships in the future and should know how to 'behave'.

Thank you for the encouragement and great advice, hidama. :)

Re: Change shortname

Heya Jason,

Would you mind changing my short name, too?
It's currently "writenow" but I want "scribbles".

Thank you so much. :)

Re: Getting close ... from a distance.

Thank you for your comment, AM.
This is an issue I did not discuss with my colleagues so, it is good to hear of your experience. It's all about respect for the differing roles we fill, isn't it? It seems that problems only arise when boundaries are crossed. Glad to hear your patients treat you well. :)

Re: Write Now - Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test

Thanks for visiting, James. This site is all brand new so not much to see ... yet. :)

I'm glad graduate medicine is offered but the exam is certainly something else completely! I cannot imagine what they are thinking when writing the questions.

As the time draws closer, I plan to write about the "fun and games" involved in preparing for the exam.

Re: My Credit Crunch Theory

Interesting thoughts that raised a few questions in my mind. So you're expecting another dot.com bubble bursting event? Would such a crash be as devastating? Surely, investors are not rushing to jump on board the Web 2.0 bandwagon in the same way as before. If platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are not making money - who is?

Re: Generation Us!

Clever title! You did well to cover so much in four minutes. I'm sure it won't be difficult to extend this to an hour's presentation. Well done. :)

Re: Health 2.0: Are We On The Same Page?

Patients are increasingly seeing themselves as a member of the healthcare team and Health 2.0 validates and supports the changed role. I am glad that you chose to include the public (think: preventative health care) in your definition.

"... we are focussing too much on technology solutions looking for problems, rather than problems looking for technology solutions." Some problems may not know they are looking for technology solutions! That is why collaboration is so important. Web 2.0 provides the means for "I have a problem!" to meet "We've got the solution/s!"

I look forward to reading your post on Medicine 2.0. There is a need for us to make clear the difference between Health 2.0 and Medicine 2.0. This is an area I have just begun to investigate. http://goldenskye.wordpress...
