You can be Christian AND support President-Elect Obama

Sigh. Okay, I've grown weary of politics. I will point out these last few facts, and then I'm done. I can't change minds, I can't make those who do not want to listen hear the truth. All I can do is state what facts I know and, of course, my opinions since this is, after all, my blog. Ultimately, I'm ready to agree to disagree. (That being said, I enjoyed reading ALL comments, and I hope that all of you will continue to visit me here.)

1. In his autobiography "The Audacity of Hope" Obama goes on to say: "I was finally able to walk down the aisle of the Trinity United Church of Christ one day and be baptized... kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side of Chicago, I felt God’s spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth." [2]

Since his baptism in the mid-80s Obama has been a practicing Christian. "I am a Christian," says Obama, who also unapologetically declares that he has "a personal relationship with Jesus Christ." (link)

From the LA Times (link): "During a presidential forum held in August at Saddleback Church, where he and McCain were interviewed separately by church leader [Rick] Warren, Obama spoke about "walking humbly with our God" and quoted from the Gospel of Matthew. His acceptance speech Tuesday night echoed in parts the church-inspired speeches of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr."

2. From the well-respected Republican Colin Powell: "...former Secretary of State Colin Powell was telling [Meet the Press] host Tom Brokaw he was disturbed that some Republicans have been spreading rumors that Barack Obama is a Muslim.

"Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim," Powell said. "He's a Christian. He's always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no. That's not America." (link)

Our presidents have been Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Unitarian, Deist, Disciples of Christ, Dutch Reformed, Quaker, Congregationalist, Catholic, and Jehovah's Witness. Just because some horrible people of the Muslim faith decided to fly planes into buildings does not mean that ALL Muslims are bad, or that Muslim-Americans are bad. Our own home-grown terrorist, Timothy McVeigh, was raised Catholic and believed in God (link); does that mean all Catholics are not to be trusted to serve or lead this country? The time will come that a Jewish person will run for president; are they not qualified because they do not believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and are still awaiting the Messiah? Of course not. We cannot, and should not, spread hate and discontent of any religion if we want our own to be respected.

3. Needless to say, Americans are polarized by the abortion issue. Pro-lifers and those who are pro-choice will probably never meet in the middle. But should this one issue determine how well a person can serve his country? None of us will ever agree on every single issue. The fact remains that abortions are currently legal, and Obama has supported Roe v. Wade, making him pro-choice. I don't think anyone in their right mind supports abortion as a practice, but the government should not have control over our bodies. (For the record, I'm Christian and I'm pro-choice. I don't think I could ever have one, but who am I to judge the circumstances another woman finds herself in?)

4. Regarding intolerance in public schools for religious issues: Like it or not (and I'm not saying I like it), prayer in schools is not allowed. Religious proselytizing in public schools is not supposed to happen legally. For these and many other reasons, I've chosen to send my children to Christian schools for their elementary and secondary education. That's my choice as an American in this country that values the separation of church and state in order to preserve our religious freedom. All I'm saying is that one Christian has no right to determine the level of Christianity of another person of faith. The teacher's comment was unkind, judgmental, and frankly, rather "un-Christian" IMHO.
