Personally I think it's because a car is just a tin box, no personality, no face, we remember the car that cuts us up but don't always see the driver. On a bike, it's you, the person, the face that people see. Maybe it's just me getting a bit paranoid, but I get angry at the increasing lack of manners, respect for others and general everyday rudeness that people simply accept as normal these days. Trying to kick back against it is like trying to hold back the tide, at what point does a person say 'if you can't beat em' join em'.

Re: Launch of the Brompton: ’sad sign of the times’

I once saw this guy on a Brompton, or something similar, fully clad in bright yellow tour-de-france racing lycras and slipstream boot covers. Came past me like a puff of wind! Must have been his 'other' bike, certainly looked a bit out of place, not that he cared, I guess.

Re: Launch of the Brompton: ’sad sign of the times’

I don't know, fold-up bikes aren't really a serious cyclists choice of travel . . . are they? Mind you, I've seen plenty of fold-up bikes flying past me on my commute, so I guess it depends on the rider. Most interesting thing in this post was that I hadn't realised that the Bromptom was a mass-produced UK bike. So hooray for that. More respect from now on.

Re: Why can’t motorists wait two seconds?

Sadly I suspect many of the commenters here have experienced something similar to your story, although, certainly in my case, not as serious. I wrote in my own blog a few days ago, about irresponsible cyclists who, through their total disregard for pedestrians and other road users, bring down anger and bad press on the rest of us. Many motorists and pedestrians see imbecilic cyclists speeding dangerously through people legitimately trying to cross roads and pass on this association to ALL cyclists. I've had many, many closes shaves and angry encounters with taxi drivers, bus drivers (the worst!), motorists and pedestrians but most of all I want to save my rage for the idiots who put us all to shame. Problem is, I'm not usually able to catch them!
