It's true, politics is not all about policies and voting records. This is how most people vote. I don't understand why this way needs defending, other than to point out when it's taking place. Or, rather, who thinks of politics as a mechanical process?

Politics ought to be about policies and voting records. I oppose Ron Paul, despite his good ACLU score, not because of how I judge his character, but because he is a libertarian, which means concrete (and nutty/misguided) policy views.

I wish there was much more rational, self-interested voting. People continuously vote against their interests: against taxing high-income earners, against reining in corporate influence, against national healthcare ... all on the basis of buying into ill-defined bogeymen like "big government" and "socialism".

If you think of information you give out as just binary bits of data, that's an awful lot of different bit permutations you could have. Spelling and punctuation included. For example, see http://panopticlick.eff.org/.
