I know past efforts have failed, but now that we have cheap, scalable tech like RFID tags, it’s easy to imagine automatic control of parking, speed checks, etc. for cars, scooters, and bikes alike.

Also, how do we *consistently* prioritize human-scale transportation? I’ve been told that the overflow of bike parking in my neighborhood could not possibly be addressed by converting even a single car space. 🙄

Re: The Best Headphones For Cycling

Totally valid observation … for the SF Bay Area.

Re: - Gothamist

As best as I can tell with some quick research, commute modal share in NYC for private car is 25%, and land use compared to other modes is 90%.

Land usage is a pretty serious measure of cultural priorities, and this pattern says to me that the culture wants *more* people driving to work.

Sources: https://factfinder.census.g...
https://www.move-lab.com/pr...

Re: What Warren Is Quietly Telling Democratic Insiders

I don't follow. But I hope London's economy isn't being substantially "pumped up" by tourism.

Over here in Amsterdam we're presently debating whether the net contribution of tourism is even positive. The usual "x% of the economy" figures turn out to ignore the increased costs to infrastructure, policing, etc., and give credit to tourists for employing every service worker they happen to meet.

Re: Florence Loses Its Mind Over Tourists Eating Sandwiches

Fergus might try living in one of the tourist-clogged cities of Europe to prevent having his mind blown so easily. 😉

Re: King's Day festivities pass off without problems, king's interview praised - DutchNews.nl

What's "sarcasm"?

Re: King's Day festivities pass off without problems, king's interview praised - DutchNews.nl

The one you're commenting on?

Re: Eindhoven region calls for €10.5bn in investment to boost tech industry

HrH is a very unhappy person.

This American was not even given 30% status. I earn about 1/5 what I did in the US, and started a business here that means I put up with a lot of heavy regulation and have even had to keep paying an employee who suddenly got "burnout" at a suspiciously convenient time.

I would be much more wealthy if I'd stayed in Seattle, and could run my business more competitively.

But I love having functioning infrastructure and a socially-minded culture, so I'm here to stay. You could pay me enough to move to California, maybe, but you could *never* pay me enough to live in a big house in Texas.

I hope the national government takes these regional requests seriously, to keep the entire country "in it" together.
