I would like to see discussion about managing all vehicles that use public infrastructure with licensing, including bikes. I know past efforts have failed, but now that we have cheap, scalable tech like RFID tags, it’s easy to imagine automatic control of parking, speed checks, etc. for cars, scooters, and bikes alike.

Also, how do we *consistently* prioritize human-scale transportation? I’ve been told that the overflow of bike parking in my neighborhood could not possibly be addressed by converting even a single car space. 🙄

As best as I can tell with some quick research, commute modal share in NYC for private car is 25%, and land use compared to other modes is 90%.

Land usage is a pretty serious measure of cultural priorities, and this pattern says to me that the culture wants *more* people driving to work.

"Tends to follow" is nearly the opposite of "tends to cause". Your argument is analogous to blaming leukemia on wig-wearing.

If it helps, this University of Hildesheim study of the exact same data set reached the same conclusion but said it differently: "Importantly, we found no evidence for a causal role of vegetarian diet in the etiology of mental disorders."

Somehow, here (in Holland) it's cheaper for us to tear up an entire street and rebuild it with brick paving and trees than it is for American cities to add a curb. Yet we pay laborers living wages to do it.

I am absolutely their target customer, running a design agency that uses Dropbox in lieu of file servers for most day-to-day work. Everything they sell, we buy.

You're basically asking how we could possibly use science to study personality traits. It's a reasonable question, but have you tried learning about the "Big Five" approach cited in this summary? It holds up surprisingly well to questions about reliability and validity.

Indeed it isn't! But I hope London's economy isn't being substantially "pumped up" by tourism.

Over here in Amsterdam we're presently debating whether the net contribution of tourism is even positive. The usual "x% of the economy" figures turn out to ignore the increased costs to infrastructure, policing, etc., and give credit to tourists for employing every service worker they happen to meet.

HrH is a very unhappy person.

This American was not even given 30% status. I earn about 1/5 what I did in the US, and started a business here that means I put up with a lot of heavy regulation and have even had to keep paying an employee who suddenly got "burnout" at a suspiciously convenient time.

I would be much more wealthy if I'd stayed in Seattle, and could run my business more competitively.

But I love having functioning infrastructure and a socially-minded culture, so I'm here to stay. You could pay me enough to move to California, maybe, but you could *never* pay me enough to live in a big house in Texas.

I hope the national government takes these regional requests seriously, to keep the entire country "in it" together. If we in Randstad benefit at the expense of the rest, we will not succeed in the long run.

Originally inspired by another Intercom blog post, we've recently been experimenting with "job stories" as a way to keep our design process oriented on user needs. Our experience is not yet deep, but early results are encouraging.

Moore's law is winding down and can no longer outrun the x86 legacy headwind. It should be very telling that they are getting into the ARM game.

I haven't been in close touch with Intel for a few years, but given that they still have the same leadership team I can assure you they are not slower than you'd like because they aren't trying hard enough and need a "kick in the pants" from some dissatisfied consumers of one of their customers.

What's your advice for them to speed up their release cycle? Do you think they should be focusing on fab efficiency, core design, macroarchitecture, or fundamental material changes like new substrates?

Or maybe they should just be waving their magic technology-making wands faster to make you happy?
