Activists have turned the commemoration of Columbus' landfall in the New World into an annual protest against "the celebration of genocide." What the protesters may not know, however, is that the holiday they are protesting once played a crucial role in forging a society capable of listening to their concerns. This is the curious tale of how Columbus Day fell victim to its own remarkable success."

http://www.theatlantic.com/...

Re: PlanPhilly | Bully for you, Center City! What is the metric you are using to divine "deservedness"?

We all know that capital for low probability start-ups is more closely related to people buying lottery tickets and hoping to win big.

I believe that businesses play an important role in the fabric of any city - large or small, great or struggling. However, I would prefer to spend my energy applying metrics of fairness and deservedness to social justice and other deeply human issues before worrying about how many high risk investment opportunities exist for wealthy people in a particular city.

Re: Squareknot’s $300K saga

These kinds of ransom note statements really bother me:

“If no one in Philly had invested in us and the city had let us down, we would’ve moved,”

I think there is value in committing to a place first. Great to see that the concern of increased traffic is not an issue:

"Okay, you're thinking, but where do all the cars go? It turns out that when you take out a high-occupancy freeway it doesn't turn the surface streets into the equivalent of the Autobahn. A theory called "induced demand" proves that if you make streets bigger, more people will use them. When you make them smaller, drivers discover and use other routes, and traffic turns out to be about the same. Don't believe it? Check out these freeway removals in cities all over the world and see for yourself."

http://gizmodo.com/6-freewa...

Re: 10 years in Philly, why Tim Quirino is leaving for Facebook [Exit Interview]

It might be worth noting that in December we hired a woman that had just moved from San Francisco to be in Philadelphia.
