You ignore how many trains are going in total around the world, also the fact that in most crashes casualties are fewer than 5-10% of passengers (only in the worst disasters like this one, it's around 30-40%) - in plane crashes it's often 100% dead. Also note the fact that this kind of train (also the one that had Enschede disaster in Germany or a recent D train crash in China) is among the least safe, because they go at very high speeds, but cars are not connected to each other with steel, therefore when crash happens, the cars pile on each other and absorb impact. The modern high speed rail, like the above mentioned AVE, also TGV/Thalys/Eurostar, also new G trains in China, that go at 300kmph have cars with steel connections therefore upon crash they don't pile up on each other like these... If I remember correctly, once a TGV derailed in France going at a very high speed, but there were few if any casualties... So please don't spread false negative propaganda about trains. The modern ones are probably the safest way of travel (well, next to modern planes), and much much much safer than cars.

Re: House, knowledge economy needs immigrants

Need educated and capable immigrants? Then pass serious gun control legislation, build the darn infrastructure (like high speed rail) and get your budget priorities right (all of which I suppose require voting the GOP out). Now these immigrants go to Western Europe, which is safe, modern and civilized (and invests increasingly more money in research and education). Or East Asia, Canada, or Australia... If you wanna stick to your guns, religion, flat earth, etc., I'm afraid you can only expect "poor, breeding" immigrants...

Re: A tax we could learn to love

It seems people don't understand irony... Taigi lietuviu linkimas link "kietos rankos" butent ateina prisimenant sovietmeti, ar ziurint i Rusija / Baltarusija, kurias neblogai pazistame... Svedai, britai ar belgai apie juos zino kur kas maziau, be to tikriausiai nera tiek nepatenkinti savo dabartine valdzia (na bent jau svedai :))
Taigi be abejo - istorines salygos svarbios, bet galiausiai susiveda i ta pacia psichologija ("kaimyno zole zalesne" ir availability bias)

Re: jonaskubilius.mp - Apie robotus

Galbut neblogas "medium-term" tikslas AI inzinieriams/mokslininkams butu sukurti kazka panasaus i HAL 9000 is A.Clarke'o The Space Odyssey ar Tom Baker is D.Adams'o Hyperland :)
