The president’s plan to provide two years of free tuition at community colleges is expected to cost $6 billion a year. The GOP says America can’t afford it, so I was curious what else cost $6 billion a year. I did a Google search, and here’s what I came up with.

It’s less than the annual amount that:
• Taxpayers pay to subsidize already profitable oil and gas companies.
• The U.S. spends on public assistance for underpaid fast-food workers and their families.
• The Hello Kitty brand earns.
• California spends on prisons.
• The state of New York spends on economic development.
• The CDC receives for its operating budget.

It’s about equal to the annual amount that:
• Casinos spend on gaming equipment.
• The NFL earns from TV networks.
• Americans give to Mexican drug cartels to buy illegal drugs.
• Taxpayers paid to subsidize ethanol until 2011.
• The U.S. still spends on nuclear weapons.
• Brazil spends on construction equipment.
• IBM spends on research & development.

And it’s slightly more than the annual amount that:
• Americans spend repairing their cars as a result of potholes.
• Miami-Dade County spends on its operating budget.

It's also about 10% of what we spend on our pets.

Why did the Bob Moog Foundation "spend money and effort while working in uncertain conditions?" Because, if they hadn't, most of what Bob Moog left behind would be gone by now. You have no idea how bad the conditions were where this stuff was stored or how quickly it was deteriorating. Most of the small portion left outside the care of the BMF has disintegrated into rot. The BMF secured a grant from the Grammy Foundation to restore Bob's collection of tapes and digitize them before they became unplayable, and thousands of contributors donated funds to save other materials from permanent loss. Thank heavens for them! Given the choice between waiting for someone to relinquish control over everyone involved and allowing Bob's archives to be lost to the ravages of time, would you have made a different choice?
