There are a lot of problems with the module at the moment, particularly if you're looking to use it on a large-scale site...

1 and 2) The Disqus guys are working on their API, which would let you do some of the things you mentioned here. Right now, the module is using just a simple script embed. When they release their full blown API, the module should move to take advantage of it. This would let us do some of the things you mentioned regarding integrating it better with Drupal.

3) They're also working on import/export features for comments, so the transition doesn't completely replace your existing comments.

4) Disqus filters spam for you, along with gives you some nifty moderation options.

Thanks for testing it out! If you have any ideas/features/bugs, let me know!

Re: Disqus and Drupal: Rethinking Comments

Ahh, more notes!

5) Having the service go down would definitely be a problem. Some frights you have with any web service out there, be it email, calendar, etc.
6) You can use CSS to style it. Not sure how easy it is, but worth investigating.

I'm very interested in seeing how this grows. It's a very young service, and they keep adding features, so it makes me wonder how it will evolve.

Re: Drupal module

I just published a Disqus Drupal module at http://drupal.org/project/d... . Enjoy!

It uses the JavaScript integration API to embed the comments and the number of comments. Once you guys release a larger public API (http://disqus.com/developers/), we can have a look at getting better integration going (single sign-on, import/export to help migration from comment module, etc).

Re: HowTo: Integrate Disqus with Drupal | iSeanReiser

Just made a Disqus Drupal module: http://drupal.org/project/d... . I want this thing to be the best it can be so that everyone can benefit. I'd like the Disqus/Drupal community to maintain it as much as possible, so that the workload can be spread out. Although it's a pretty small module itself, there's still a lot of work and skill required to keep it up and running among different versions of Drupal.

Speaking of which, I just committed the basics of the Drupal 5 backport. http://drupal.org/node/269051 . I didn't really test it, so I'm expecting bug reports from YOU! :-) .... If you're willing to help maintain the Drupal 5 branch, then please send over your Drupal.org username so I can add you as a maintainer. Thanks a lot, any help is appreciated. Bug reports and patches especially! http://drupal.org/node/268945

The backport didn't require much because all the hooks were pretty much the same, aside from the altered menu system.

Re: Disqus and Drupal: Rethinking Comments

What do you mean? Did you make any progress with your jQuery integration? Correct?

Re: disqus_url?

A descriptor unique to the community portal might do it. Either that or
making it not require the absolute URL...

disqus_url = "my_path/my_post"

By giving the thread a unique identifier (or a unique path) for the
community portal, you could have the same thread listed on multiple
domains, and not worry about having to maintain disqus_url among
different domains.

Any thoughts?

Re: Disqus and Drupal: Rethinking Comments

Glad to know everything is working.
