Despite adding to my depression, thank you for introducing me to Chas Freeman.

Re: Mobile Mix: The deal we’ve all been waiting for

Excellent summary!

Re: NAB, Wi-Fi Alliance Battle on Over 6 MHz - by John Eggerton

Don't you mean 6 GHz?

Re: Tech Tyranny

Excellent program, as usual, with many thought-provoking moments for me. I offer a couple of thoughts:

We will not rewind technology, e.g., face recognition, so our path must be managing and regulating it, individually and as a society. As individuals, we must learn how to engage with one another in civil discourse. Collectively, in addition to expecting government regulations to protect our privacy, we should have collectives addressing the edges of technology, formulating ideas, and advocating policies. Without the collective voice of the people, our legislators will be lobbied by the technology firms, favoring them until some egregious incident occurs.

The impact of technology on workers warrants an ongoing dialog; it's a complex topic. Working in the semiconductor industry, I've seen the impact of technology and globalization on the supply chain. Assembly and test moved from Massachusetts to Ireland to Asia (China, India, Thailand) to reduce product cost. While that eliminated assembly and test jobs in the U.S., it enabled the growth of the mobile phone industry, which led to the Blackberry and iPhone and new design engineering and software jobs in the U.S., as well as the mobile internet technology we rely on today.

On a future program, I would love to hear Seth Godin's views on this topic, as he seems to be an advocate of the internet and technology, with a compelling vision of the opportunities for workers to emerge from the "command and control" factory environment.

Re: How to Curate Content: The Secret Sauce to Getting Noticed, Becoming an Influencer, and Having Fun Online

Kevan, thanks for the comprehensive overview of process and tools. I will be adopting the discover, read, share batching approach and am looking forward to using the automated IFTTT to Buffer link. That will definitely streamline my choppy process. I also like the idea of using no more than 25 sources; keeping up with all my RSS, website links, and email subscriptions is not manageable.

Re: Friday N.H. And thank you for beginning with a discussion of our governance model.

I have served on both types of boards that you identify: the "hands on" board in charge of operations and several policy-based governance boards. I advocate for the latter, as it allows the board to invest the members' limited time on the future direction of the organization. With the former, the board's time is too easily consumed looking in the rear-view mirror -- listening to committee reports about past activities -- and periodically getting mired in a short-term, stylistic decisions -- like deciding what color paper the stewardship brochure should be printed on.

Effective policy-based governance doesn't just happen, though. It requires practice, like an orchestra preparing for a performance. The score and individual parts must first be written, and the members must practice playing together and in tune. This is particularly important since the conductor and members are rotating off and replaced by new players, a few every year. Effective policy-based governance requires constant renewal.

The risk with a policy-based governance board is vision without action. The dedicated executive in the structure addresses this. The risk with a hands on board is an efficient organization that doesn't know where it's going. I personally haven't seen an effective way to address this, particularly in a dynamic and growing organization.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill's quip about democracy, "policy-based governance is the worst form of governance -- except for all the others."

Re: Friday N.H.
