It is with much sadness that I, and the rest of the world, found out that another legendary mangaka has passed. Akira Toriyama, most famous for creating Dragon Ball, passed away on March 1st at the age of 68. His production company, Bird Studio, announced it a week later on March 8th.

To me, Dragon Ball is synonymous with manga and anime. And so the creator of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama, may as well have created the medium and genre that I have loved my entire life. I first saw Dragon Ball Z on American television as a 12 year old kid and was immediately in awe. I am sure I had some exposure to the original Dragon Ball before this, but never had access to seeing more of it. During that summer, I visited my cousins in New York and saw as much Dragon Ball related media I could ever want in Chinatown.

It was also at this time that the Internet was emerging and I spent countless hours browsing all of the popular Dragon Ball websites at the time. I was on our 26.4kb dial-up Internet so much that summer the actual phone line burned out and smoke came out!

Given the painstakingly slow progress of the 4kids Dragon Ball Z showing, I had to have more! I read just about all the resources online for this amazing series. I wanted to share my passion for it so naturally I created my own website. Geocities gave a whopping 2mb amount of storage which was more than enough. (And I'll never forget my first little home on the Internet, geocities/tokyo/ towers/3665 - just rolls off the tongue and is so easy to type in.) I filled my 1.4mb hard disks with as many images and saved websites as I could. I would have my best friends over and write html to have animated gif Goku fighting animated gif Vegeta, and we would ooh and ahh when it worked!

At this time I joined the mIRC #db channel, met some of my new idols of amazing Dragon Ball websites like the creator Wuken, HFIL, SREDBZ, and many more. Their amazing websites, many of which I can still vividly picture in my head like when I was 13 years old and visiting daily, led to me wanting to create better designed websites. So Dragon Ball really did lead to my career path as a web developer and I have no idea where I'd be without it. And while this website has been a shell of itself for the past many years, I know the time spent on the websites I've created span over 3000 years combined amount of time!

I also have to mention that one of the earliest games I was addicted to was Dragon Warrior, which I would find out later was called Dragon Quest in Japan. I received the game when I was a kid because I was signed up for Nintendo Power magazine. I would play it nonstop on our small CRT TV that had such bad picture quality that lots of the dialog I couldn't read because of the squiggly picture. And this infamously led to me accidentally deleting my sister's save file and her locking me up in the washer/drier mud room! It's no surprise to me that I would later find out Akira Toriyama was involved with every Dragon Quest game.

This isn't so much a tribute to the legend of Toriyama as it is just how he really did affect my life before I even knew who he was. You have to believe every manga/anime series you love is in someway attributed to Akira Toriyama as well. I could go as far as to say he helped mold countless generations. We aren't watching Goku battle villains, we are Goku at that moment. When you're playing Dragon Quest or Chrono Trigger, Toriyama's designs are a huge part of what makes those games so great.

It's really hard to fathom Kentaro Miura passing away in 2021 and Akira Toriyama passing away now in 2024, both at an early age. They both have molded my life so much. And as nerdy or silly as it sounds, their creations really have made this world so much better.

That's cool, I'm glad SN was a good source of manga for so many! Glad people grew up with this site - I definitely grew up creating the site so we were all in on it. Once the larger manga companies decided to show their product online then it was too tough to continue to show manga scans but it was quite a run, something like 2000-2018. I do plan to do something more with this site but at the same time am more focused on being a freelance web developer these days, but am happy to see people still visiting :)

Great article. I'd also recommend doing the same but in the reverse direction so you do not start on highway 1 but instead start right onto Higgins Canyon Rd. The climb up to Purisima is tougher this direction, Strava says 1 mile and average of 8.5% incline, but it's very peaceful and generally not too many cars. You can avoid starting off on highway 1 this way and having to make any left turns through traffic. You would then end the ride going north on highway 1 where you'll get nicer ocean views and mostly flat or slightly downhill. The headwind can be there but it's hit or miss if it'll be super strong or not.

Unfortunately once manga companies finally decided to focus on serving their own online manga then it kind of doomed sites like SN. While I do want to bring it back, it would be a different site and not one that served up manga. We had a great run, far longer than I could ever expect, but to host manga now is just hard because you'll get countless threats (real or just bluffing) and it might not always be from the manga companies but instead 3rd party companies that sole purpose is to look for DMCA type stuff. Annoyingly enough, I heard from a friend who worked at Viz, that before they served online manga that they would be fine with online manga scans because it was like free marketing. They knew it was happening but didn't care to stop it. Of course once they decided to serve their own manga online, then naturally they will want to get rid of all the sources out there serving it up for free. I can't see this changing anytime soon so it's just too risky to have a manga site these days.

Glad to hear Spectrum Nexus and Berserk are tied together for you. It's really sad to see a 20+ year story end like this, but as we've seen with a lot of stories, sometimes the ending ruins it (GoT anyone?)

I'll never forget seeing Griffith be reborn and the ensuing fight that took place on the hill of swords (my little dedication to Miura at the top of the page). Guts' line of seeing Griffith in the flesh and for a second forgetting to kill him. And then of course Guts and Griffith finally talking after the Eclipse and after years of wondering as the black swordsman. That moment will always be my favorite in the series and I still think of it often.

If we never get a conclusion to Berserk, that will be fine by me (as hard as it is to say that). The ol' cliche of "life is a journey, not a destination" I think holds up well with Berserk. Berserk was a fucking adventure unlike anything I've seen before.

I watched the anime on bootleg DVD that I got on ebay in 2001 (where the quality was way better than the VCDs I used to get from there)... I was blown away by it. Of course the original series ended on a massive cliffhanger so I had to seek out the manga. It wasn't exactly the easiest to find (I imagine I found it on mIRC channels) so I wanted to create a Berserk section on Spectrum Nexus so people could find it just by googling it. I got lucky where my server didn't offer much bandwidth and had lots of limitations (especially in the early 2000's) but I found a workaround to allow for .rar/.zip downloads of full entire volumes and would give it out that way with ftp links; having a few volumes rotate every few days. Eventually I had a manga viewer and that's probably where the majority of people discovered Berserk on this site. So I'm happy this site could play a small part in discovering this amazing series in Berserk.

After a night to think about it, I much rather have Berserk end on a cliffhanger than end terribly where no one was satisfied. Though knowing Miura, he would have fucking nailed the ending and we would still have questions and want to learn more, but still be satisfied. Still, Miura was a god damn genius and we were able to see his amazing work and I think we're all lucky to have witnessed it.

Awesome read. I remember wondering what was Zenith thinking when the old defy xtremes came out but at the same time I couldn't look away as they intrigued me and had people talking (at least from what I heard). And let's be honest, Zenith didn't do much for the next 10 years until just recently with their El Primero 21 releases. I'm glad they didn't choose to forget the defy extreme series and are keeping the line going with their latest releases.
