Does anyone have a sense of bike access? Are those lumped in with no cars allowed? I wonder if one could claim "local" bike access by convincing the guards that one was visiting a friend on the block... who happened to not be home... :-) It's a fun block to ride down, as long as you lower your seat for the extreme grade.

Such great news and a smart choice for families. Cargo bikes in general are awesome, and the e-assist makes it that much more practical. I saw a guy yesterday with two kids on his e-XtraCycle going right up 17th Street in Cole Valley and I was totally impressed.

I *loved* testing e-bikes at The New Wheel, and am seriously considering one, especially since I just moved to MIraloma Park. I didn't notice the weight while I was riding, and am very grateful for ground-floor parking at home and a very friendly freight elevator operator at work...

But don't we think Chevy is doing us a service? I mean, it's saving us from the paltry bus service (24, 5, 21, 31, 22, 6, 71) and far-flung location (just smack-dab in the middle of the northern part of the City, not too many hill to bike or walk)? Oh, no? Yeah, I agree. This is really, really sad.

Parenting issues? Clearly the egregious violation here is calling this Glen Park. There are equal cases to be made for Mission Terrace and the Excelsior, but Glen Park? Have another cookie.

Speaking of bus-only lanes, I've often wondered where to bike up Sutter. The cars go too fast uphill for me to keep up, and the right lane is technically bus-only. That said, once I pass one bus, they never pass me again (and I look; they're just really slow).

I just started reading Henderson's book and am enjoying it heartily. Great breakdown.

This story of stories made me so happy because this is what happens in a public space when one takes a break from the screen. I'll ascribe the creativity and spontaneity to the Bay Area specifically, but I'm not sure how self-centered that is. But it's well-told, and that ALWAYS makes me happy. Thanks, d@n.

Re: valets, I do know that the car valets at my office building are pretty skilled, so space-saving is real, but I'm curious about the bike parking:

What is the security situation? What style of racks are provided? How many car spots does "hundreds and hundreds" of bikes take up? How public and accessible are these spots for cyclists?

"and people can stop anytime they want to.” Yes, I find myself braking and hopping off if I see something interesting or remember that I need to buy something at a store I'm riding by. If there is nice bike rack parking in front of the store, I'm more inclined to run in and buy something, like the other day at a produce store on Valencia.

A few notes about functionality: I remember hearing that the sensors are only in the bike lane; can anyone confirm? I wonder if there's any way to determine what percentage of bikes go by in other lanes to figure out how many bikes are actually riding that stretch. (From the pic above, 2 are likely being counted and 2 aren't.)

Oftentimes in a morning commute peleton or even when two or three bikes are going over at short intervals, I'll notice that the counter only accounts for a portion of them. I imagine this is a sensor issue, but I wonder if it's impossible to fix?

14 this year? That's 14 too many. Cars coming out of Clinton Park (I bike southbound on Valencia on my commute home) are often going too fast, but half the time I have to take the lane because of Friends School car parkers going in and out or blocking the bike traffic lane.

Be safe out there; there's literally a killer on the loose sharing the streets with you.

Extra caution is always key, yes. Especially when tourist (drivers/parkers) are involved. Of course then you have the tourist bike renters in the bike areas... :-)

This bike valet dreams of a day when too many bikes to park is a problem. Well, it has been at post-season Giants games, I guess, but nothing on A'dam levels.

Re: locking: My Dutch roommate said it's important to have several bikes. One for bumming around town doing errands, a nice long-distance one, a beater for the train station and a family one for the kids!
