George Lois had NOTHING to do with MTV's design. He was not even involved at all with them channel until the spring of 1982, almost one year after the channel launch.

The logo was conceived and designed by Manhattan Design/NY (Frank Olinsky, Pat Gorman, Patty Rogoff). The animated IDs were done by independents around the globe (like Colossal Pictures/SF, Broadcast Arts/Washington DC, Buzzco/NY). The on-air was designed by the in-house team like Marcy Brafman, Richard Schenkman, Marc Chusid, and Nancy Palladino.

It was actually Lois' brilliant partner, Dale Pon, who even brought George to the party (Dale was the person who recommended me for my MTV job to head man Bob Pittman), and guided George through the whole thing, and it was Dale who oversaw the entire "I Want My MTV!" campaign, both strategically and creatively. Buzzco/NY produced the commercials, with Buzz Potamkin producing, Thomas Schlamme doing the original live action, and Candy Kugel directed the animation; Dale Pon directed the live action in all subsequent creative flights, Buzzco again producing the rest. George came up with the phrase (which, by the by, he knocked off from John Hubley's fantastic animated "I Want My Maypo!" in September 1956, BEFORE Lois made his mark in advertising), and Dale handled everything from then on.

Re: ‘Castlevania’ season 2 is already in the Netflix pipeline

I'd like to make a clarification in your piece. Adi Shakar is indeed an important executive producer on our Castlevania films, but it was not his brainchild. Kevin Kolde came to Frederator from his Project 51 Productions over a decade with CV rights in hand, hard won after several years. Kevin identified and recruited the extraordinary Warren Ellis and we commissioned and completed a feature length script almost 10 years ago. He also identified Powerhouse Animation to be our creative partner. Kevin Kolde was the person who was frustrated by the poor adaptions of video games into film and was determined to see quality characters and stories from his favorite mediums.

Re: Frederator Networks Sale Underscores the Challenges of Distributing Animation on the Internet

Charles (and all the Animation Scoop readers), ost all of your analysis is spot on, as usual. I'll only add my own commentary on one point. Frederator joining forces with Michael Hirsh and Rainmaker in Wow! is indeed a positive move forward for us and for the creators in the Channel Frederator Network. Our pool of resources expands, so our ability to support all our members definitely is enhanced accordingly. And the international nature of the partnership starts to l t us fulfill our belief that in the internet age, the television universe is now global.

Where I differ is that Frederator and Wow! are the classic definition of an "independent" studio. We've searched for several years for partners that would make it possible to continue our two decad vision of identifying and support original voices in animation, and this alignment is just that arrangement. Michael has certainly worked with more original talents than almost anyone in the business, including us, and we're excited to ow be a viable alternative to the corporate conglomerates that practically define our industry. My role as the company's Chief Creative Officer and still CEO of Frederator will make that possible.

Are things tough? You bet. But that's true whether you're Time Warner or Frederator. We're in the midst of maximum disruption and only the flexible and visionaries survive.

Re: I, for one, welcome our new newsstand

Jeff, I'm very very late on this comment, but I'll post it anyhow.

"Negotiating" trust with Facebook is like negotiating an editorial policy with Rupert Murdoch when he buys a newspaper; we know it's not worth the screen the contract is written on. Yes, they provide valuable audience access, but going into business with them is dangerous and encourages them to continue to abuse their partners (and audience, not for nothing). I understand the rock-and-hard-place, I'm in it myself. But ultimately, one gets what one deserves when they choose to "negotiate" with weasels. Would you "negotiate trust" with Donald Trump? I'm not so sure.

Re: The Most Misunderstood Facts About Building a Business on YouTube

As usual Mark, probably the most incisive look at YouTube's potentials (and issues) from anywhere in the ecosystem. I've tried to figure out a way to send them to super fans, but honestly, we've been lucky enough to have too many (such problems!). Occasionally I send individual cards to someone who makes a request (if the edition isn't depleted). If there's one you particularly covet, drop me an email and I'll see if we have any left. Thanks for wondering, I appreciate it.

Re: Fred Seibert's Tumblr

We're trying to figure that out right now. A lot. Spark Capital took a chance on me and my partners at Next New Networks could help reinvent the television business. David Karp took a chance that an older guy could help a new platform for creativity. Tom Freston took a chance that a TV guy could be an internet guy. Albie Hecht and Herb Scannell took a chance that an executive could succeed as an independent cartoon producer. Scott Sassa took a chance that a branding guy could run a Hollywood studio. Alan Goodman took a chance that two friends could start a creative business together and succeed. Bob Pittman took the chance that a barely professional radio guy and record producer could help launch the new medium of cable television. And Joe Fields took the chance that a college radio geek could produce world class jazz albums. A lot of people took chances with me. Thanks everyone.

Re: I Want My Helvetica: MTV's Millenial-Friendly Minimalist Design

Not to pick a nit Steve, but I hate it when George Lois gets/takes the credit for the I Want My MTV! campaign (he also often falsely claims the logo).

Dale Pon was the primary creative and strategic force behind this famous campaign. I lay out the full story on one of my tumblrs (http://fredseibert.com/tagg..., but here it is in short strokes.

I was the first creative director at MTV for Bob PIttman and hired Dale Pon to do our advertising after Ogilvy botched it; Dale was partnered with George Lois, Bill Pitts and Dick Gershon at LPG/Pon. George had adapted the John Hubley 50s campaign, I Want My Maypo, and presented a direct rip of his almost unseen version with sports stars, substituting rock stars like Mick Jagger literally crying in the storyboard; he'd been inspired by copy that Dale had directed in one of our trade ads. Dale knew we'd find this ridiculous, made a better version, and sold in throughout MTV attached to a brillant media strategy.

George was nowhere to be found until he came up with a few video logo treatments and again when the final spots were presented.

Dale produced the original spots along with my creative partner Alan Goodman, with Tommy Schlamme directing and Buzz Potamkin as the executive producer.

Thanks for letting me set the record straight.

Re: Check Out Pen Ward's More Mature Themed BRAVEST WARRIORS - News - GeekTyrant

A little late, but I wanted to say thanks from everyone at Cartoon Hangover for the great shout out.

Re:
